Post-nasal drip, chest tightness, and difficulty breathing?

Hello, doctor.
I am 158 cm tall and weigh 43 kg.
For the past six months, I have been experiencing persistent post-nasal drip, and recently I have had episodes of chest tightness and difficulty breathing.
I also feel an itch deep in my throat and chest, and when I tap my chest, it feels like something is stuck in my lungs and itchy.
After visiting a clinic, the doctor indicated that my blood pressure is within normal range and there are no significant abnormalities in the lung and heart auscultation.
After taking medication, my condition improved, but the symptoms still reappear after a few days, and sometimes the chest tightness can last all day.
I would like to ask the doctor how I should proceed with treatment.
Should I see a pulmonologist? Is there a connection between post-nasal drip and chest tightness or difficulty breathing?

Hello: Based on your description, you may be experiencing allergic rhinitis or sinusitis, which could be causing post-nasal drip.
It is recommended that you visit an otolaryngology clinic for evaluation.
Additionally, regarding your symptoms of chest tightness or shortness of breath, these may sometimes be related to post-nasal drip, but they could also be caused by asthma.
It is advisable to address the post-nasal drip first and then monitor your symptoms.
Thank you.

More Info

Post-nasal drip is a common condition that occurs when excess mucus accumulates in the back of the throat, often leading to a sensation of mucus dripping down from the nasal passages. This can be caused by various factors, including allergies, sinus infections, colds, or even certain medications. The symptoms you are experiencing—chest tightness, difficulty breathing, and a sensation of something stuck in your throat or chest—can indeed be related to post-nasal drip.

When mucus drips down the back of the throat, it can irritate the lining of the throat and airways, leading to inflammation. This inflammation can cause a range of symptoms, including coughing, throat clearing, and even chest discomfort. In some cases, the mucus can also trigger bronchospasm, which is a tightening of the muscles around the airways, leading to difficulty breathing and a feeling of tightness in the chest. This is particularly true if you have a history of asthma or other respiratory conditions.

Given that your blood pressure is normal and your heart and lung examinations did not reveal any significant abnormalities, it is possible that your symptoms are primarily related to post-nasal drip and its effects on your respiratory system. The itching sensation in your throat and chest could be a sign of irritation caused by the mucus, and the feeling of something being stuck could be due to the accumulation of mucus in the airways.

In terms of treatment, it is essential to address the underlying cause of your post-nasal drip. If allergies are a contributing factor, antihistamines or nasal corticosteroids may be beneficial. If a sinus infection is present, a course of antibiotics may be necessary. Additionally, staying well-hydrated and using saline nasal sprays can help thin the mucus and promote drainage.

Since you mentioned that your symptoms improve with medication but return after a few days, it may be worthwhile to consult with an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination of your nasal passages and throat to identify any structural issues or chronic conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms. If necessary, they may recommend further treatments, such as allergy testing or imaging studies.

As for whether you should see a pulmonologist (chest specialist), it may be beneficial if your symptoms persist or worsen despite treatment. A pulmonologist can evaluate your lung function and determine if there are any underlying respiratory conditions that need to be addressed.

In summary, post-nasal drip can indeed be related to your symptoms of chest tightness and difficulty breathing. Addressing the underlying cause of the post-nasal drip is crucial for effective treatment. Consulting with an ENT specialist is a good next step, and if your symptoms do not improve, a visit to a pulmonologist may also be warranted. In the meantime, consider using saline nasal sprays, staying hydrated, and avoiding known allergens to help manage your symptoms.
