Can I Drink Yogurt After Having a Duodenal Ulcer? - Internal Medicine

If you have a history of gastric ulcers, is it safe to drink yogurt?

Hello Dr.
Hong: A few months ago (in May), I was diagnosed with a duodenal ulcer, but my condition has improved.
Currently, I am experiencing bloating, and a recent colonoscopy revealed signs of inflammation.
I enjoy drinking yogurt, as I have heard it is beneficial for health, but yogurt is considered a cold food.
I would like to ask if it is suitable for me to consume yogurt, and if so, how can I drink it in a way that is less harmful to my stomach? Recently, I have been drinking about 150cc after meals without feeling discomfort.
Should I completely avoid it? Thank you.

Dr. Hong Hongchang reply Internal Medicine

Peptic ulcers are closely related to Helicobacter pylori.
Generally, it is necessary to take specific medications for three to four months.
Additionally, it is important to avoid irritant foods (such as tea, coffee, tobacco, and alcohol) and pain relievers.
Maintaining regular meal times and portion sizes is crucial, as well as avoiding late nights and stress.
Furthermore, yogurt can promote gastrointestinal motility; however, if symptoms such as bloating, diarrhea, or abdominal pain occur, the intake should be reduced or discontinued.
For further issues, please follow up with a gastroenterologist.

When it comes to managing a duodenal ulcer, dietary choices can play a significant role in your recovery and overall gastrointestinal health. Yogurt, particularly when it is plain and unsweetened, can be beneficial for individuals with digestive issues, including ulcers. This is primarily due to its probiotic content, which can help restore the balance of good bacteria in the gut and promote healing.

However, there are several factors to consider when deciding whether to consume yogurt after having a duodenal ulcer:
1. Probiotics and Gut Health: Yogurt is a good source of probiotics, which are beneficial bacteria that can aid digestion and may help in the healing process of the gastrointestinal tract. Probiotics can enhance the gut flora, potentially reducing inflammation and promoting a healthier digestive environment.

2. Acidity and Irritation: While yogurt is generally considered a soothing food, it is important to note that some individuals may experience discomfort from dairy products, especially if they are lactose intolerant. If you notice any symptoms such as bloating, gas, or abdominal pain after consuming yogurt, it may be best to limit or avoid it.

3. Temperature Sensitivity: You mentioned that yogurt is a cold food, and while cold foods can sometimes exacerbate symptoms in sensitive individuals, many people with ulcers tolerate yogurt well. If you are concerned about the temperature, you might consider letting the yogurt sit at room temperature for a short period before consuming it, which can make it less cold and potentially easier on your stomach.

4. Moderation is Key: Since you have been drinking about 150cc of yogurt after meals without experiencing discomfort, it seems that you are tolerating it well. Moderation is crucial; consuming yogurt in small amounts can help you gauge your body's response. If you continue to feel well, you may not need to eliminate it entirely from your diet.

5. Dietary Balance: It is essential to maintain a balanced diet while managing a duodenal ulcer. Incorporating a variety of foods that are gentle on the stomach, such as cooked vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains, can support your recovery. Avoiding spicy, acidic, or overly fatty foods is generally recommended, as these can irritate the stomach lining.

6. Consulting Healthcare Providers: Since you have a history of gastrointestinal issues, it is always a good idea to discuss any dietary changes with your healthcare provider or a registered dietitian. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific health needs and conditions.

In summary, yogurt can be a beneficial addition to your diet after a duodenal ulcer, provided you tolerate it well. Pay attention to your body's signals, consume it in moderation, and consider discussing your dietary choices with a healthcare professional to ensure they align with your recovery goals. If you experience any adverse effects, it may be wise to reconsider its inclusion in your diet.
