Lymph node
Hello, last year I went to National Taiwan University Hospital for an examination due to a hard lump in my neck, which was diagnosed by the doctor as a lymph node.
I had blood tests and a biopsy, and everything was normal, except for an elevated immune system (I think it was ANA, but I forgot).
After taking medication, the lump decreased significantly, but recently it has started to swell again, and I feel a bit uncomfortable.
Is this related to stress? Also, do I need to get checked again or just go to the hospital for medication? Thank you!

Hello: (1) Diseases caused by immune system imbalance may sometimes present with lymphadenopathy, which could be related to stress.
(2) Certain malignancies are more common in patients with immune dysregulation; if there is newly discovered lymphadenopathy, it is essential to return for evaluation by a specialist to determine if further examinations are necessary.

Lymph nodes are an essential part of the immune system, acting as filters for harmful substances and playing a crucial role in the body's defense against infections and diseases. When lymph nodes become swollen or tender, it can be a sign of various underlying conditions, ranging from infections to more serious diseases like lymphoma.
In your case, it seems that you have previously experienced swollen lymph nodes in your neck, which were evaluated through blood tests and a biopsy, revealing that your immune system was somewhat overactive. The fact that the swelling has recurred after initially subsiding could indeed be related to several factors, including stress.
Stress can have a significant impact on the immune system. When you experience stress, your body releases hormones such as cortisol, which can influence immune function. Chronic stress may lead to an overactive immune response, potentially causing lymph nodes to swell as they work harder to filter out pathogens or respond to inflammation. Additionally, stress can exacerbate existing health conditions, making it essential to manage stress effectively through relaxation techniques, exercise, and adequate sleep.
Regarding your current situation, it is crucial to monitor the symptoms associated with the swollen lymph nodes. If the swelling persists, increases in size, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, night sweats, unexplained weight loss, or persistent fatigue, it is advisable to seek medical attention promptly. These could be signs of a more serious condition that requires further evaluation.
In terms of medical follow-up, it would be prudent to consult with your healthcare provider. They may recommend additional tests, such as imaging studies (like an ultrasound or CT scan) or further blood tests, to assess the cause of the lymph node swelling. If the lymph nodes are tender or painful, or if you experience any new symptoms, it is essential to address these concerns with your doctor.
In summary, while stress can influence immune function and potentially contribute to lymph node swelling, it is vital to approach this situation with caution. Regular check-ups and open communication with your healthcare provider will help ensure that any underlying issues are addressed appropriately. If you feel uncertain about your symptoms or their implications, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and staying informed and proactive about your health is the best approach.
