Is it possible to get pregnant three days after menstruation without using protection?

I got my period on October 17, and my usual cycle is 32 to 35 days.
I had external rubbing and unprotected intercourse for one minute with my boyfriend on October 24.
Is there a chance I could get pregnant? Do I need to take emergency contraception? Normally, three days after my period ends is not considered the ovulation period, right? Thank you, doctor!

K, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/10/25

To address your question about the possibility of getting pregnant three days after your period ends, we need to consider several factors related to the menstrual cycle, ovulation, and the timing of sexual intercourse.

The average menstrual cycle lasts about 28 days, but it can vary significantly among individuals, ranging from 21 to 35 days. In your case, you mentioned that your cycle typically ranges from 32 to 35 days. This means that ovulation, which is when an egg is released from the ovary and is the time when you can conceive, typically occurs about 14 days before your next period starts. For a 32 to 35-day cycle, ovulation would likely occur around days 18 to 21 of your cycle.

If your last period started on October 17, and assuming a 32 to 35-day cycle, you would expect to ovulate around November 2 to November 7. Since you had sexual intercourse on October 24, this date falls about 10 to 13 days before your expected ovulation. In general, sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, so if you were to ovulate shortly after your intercourse, there is a possibility that sperm could still be viable and lead to pregnancy.

However, it is important to note that the days immediately following your period are typically considered to be less fertile, especially if your cycle is longer. The likelihood of conception occurring from intercourse that takes place three days after your period ends is relatively low, but not impossible, particularly if your cycle is on the shorter end of your range.

Regarding the need for emergency contraception (the "morning-after pill"), it is most effective when taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. If you are concerned about the possibility of pregnancy and it has been less than 72 hours since the intercourse, you may consider taking emergency contraception. However, if you are within a few days of your expected ovulation, the effectiveness of emergency contraception may be reduced.

In summary, while it is less likely to get pregnant three days after your period ends, it is not impossible, especially considering the variability of ovulation timing. If you are concerned about the risk of pregnancy, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and to discuss the option of emergency contraception if appropriate. Additionally, tracking your menstrual cycle and understanding your ovulation patterns can help you make informed decisions about contraception and family planning in the future.

If the menstrual cycle is 21 to 22 days long, having intercourse on the eighth day (counting from the first day of menstruation) could result in pregnancy. If the cycle is 28 days, having sexual intercourse starting on the twelfth day could lead to conception.
