Post-Nasopharyngoscopy: Persistent Unilateral Nasal Discharge Concerns - Otolaryngology

After the nasopharyngoscopy examination, unilateral nasal discharge began?

Hello, doctor.
Yesterday, I went to the hospital for a health check-up, which included a nasopharyngoscopy.
During the examination, I felt that the endoscope was inserted quite deeply.
When I left the hospital, I noticed a heavier sensation of foreign body in my left nostril, while my right nostril felt normal.
After getting home in the evening, I still felt the foreign body sensation, so I forcefully blew my nose.
After clearing out some mucus, my left nostril began to run continuously, although the amount was not much.
This morning, it is still running, and if I don't blow it out, it turns into post-nasal drip in my mouth.
I would like to ask if this is an injury to my nostril? Is it possible that it will improve in a few days, or do I need to seek medical attention promptly? Thank you.

Hello, if there is no obvious bleeding, it is commonly due to nasal examination causing irritation and resulting in a runny nose, which can be observed at home.
However, if it persists without improvement, it is advisable to visit an otolaryngology clinic for evaluation.

After undergoing a nasopharyngoscopy, it is not uncommon to experience some discomfort or unusual sensations in the nasal passages. Your description of persistent unilateral nasal discharge following the procedure raises a few important considerations.

Firstly, the sensation of an "object" or increased discomfort in the left nostril, along with the subsequent nasal discharge, can often be attributed to irritation or minor trauma caused by the nasopharyngoscope. This instrument is designed to provide a clear view of the nasal and pharyngeal structures, but its insertion can lead to temporary inflammation or irritation of the mucosal lining. This irritation may manifest as a feeling of congestion or the sensation of an obstruction, which is what you are experiencing.

The fact that you are experiencing a clear nasal discharge is generally a good sign. It suggests that the body is responding to the irritation by producing mucus, which is a natural defense mechanism. In most cases, this type of post-procedural discharge is self-limiting and should improve within a few days as the nasal tissues heal. However, if the discharge persists beyond a week, becomes discolored (indicating a possible infection), or is accompanied by other symptoms such as fever, significant pain, or a foul odor, it would be advisable to seek medical attention.

Regarding your concern about whether this indicates a more serious injury to the nasal passages, it is important to note that while minor trauma can occur, significant injuries are rare. If there is no visible bleeding and the discharge remains clear, it is likely that your symptoms will resolve on their own. However, if you notice any signs of significant bleeding or if the discomfort worsens, it would be prudent to consult an ENT specialist for further evaluation.

In summary, while your symptoms are likely a result of the nasopharyngoscopy and should improve with time, it is essential to monitor your condition. If you experience any worsening symptoms or if the discharge does not resolve in a reasonable timeframe, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and comfort are paramount, and a healthcare professional can provide the necessary reassurance and treatment if needed.
