High myopia?

Hello, doctor.
I previously had a pair of glasses, but the prescription was too strong, which made me uncomfortable after wearing them for a long time.
Later, I got a new pair of glasses with a prescription of -5.50 and -4.75.
I asked the optical shop to reduce the prescription a bit, and now I wear the lower prescription glasses most of the time, except during classes.
Is this okay? Recently, I feel that my vision has become a bit more blurry, and I would like to know if continuing to wear the lower prescription glasses will worsen my myopia.
Thank you.

Yz, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/11/17

Unless the difference in prescription is significant, it will not cause an increase in eye prescription.
In fact, a slightly lower prescription is more ideal than an overly strong one.

Wearing weaker glasses can indeed have implications for your myopia, or nearsightedness, but the relationship is not as straightforward as one might think. When you wear glasses with a lower prescription than what your eyes actually need, it can lead to a few potential issues.
Firstly, if your glasses are not strong enough to correct your vision adequately, you may find yourself straining your eyes more to see clearly. This can lead to symptoms such as eye fatigue, headaches, and discomfort. Over time, this constant strain might contribute to a worsening of your myopia. The eye muscles work harder to focus, which can potentially lead to an increase in the degree of nearsightedness.

Secondly, wearing weaker glasses can affect your visual habits. If you are accustomed to seeing clearly with a certain prescription, switching to a weaker one may cause you to rely on your eyes to compensate for the lack of clarity. This can lead to a cycle of dependency on weaker prescriptions, which may not only make your vision feel worse but could also contribute to the progression of myopia.

Moreover, there is a phenomenon known as "myopic creep," where individuals who do not wear their full prescription may experience a gradual worsening of their myopia over time. This is particularly relevant for children and young adults whose eyes are still developing. In your case, since you mentioned that you feel your vision has become more blurred recently, it could be a sign that your eyes are not receiving the proper correction they need.

It's also important to consider the environment in which you are using your glasses. If you are primarily using weaker glasses for activities that require clear vision, such as reading or using a computer, this could exacerbate the issue. The visual demands of these activities require adequate correction to prevent eye strain and fatigue.

If you are experiencing increased blurriness or discomfort, it would be wise to consult with an eye care professional. They can assess your current prescription and determine whether a stronger pair of glasses is necessary. Additionally, they can provide guidance on managing your myopia effectively.
In terms of managing myopia, there are several strategies that may help slow its progression. These include:
1. Regular Eye Exams: Keeping up with regular eye check-ups can help monitor your vision and make necessary adjustments to your prescription.

2. Proper Lighting: Ensure that you have adequate lighting when reading or using screens to reduce eye strain.

3. Limit Screen Time: Reducing the amount of time spent on digital devices can help alleviate eye strain.

4. Outdoor Activities: Studies suggest that spending more time outdoors may help slow the progression of myopia in children and adolescents.

5. Orthokeratology: This is a non-surgical procedure that involves wearing specially designed contact lenses overnight to reshape the cornea and temporarily reduce myopia.

6. Atropine Eye Drops: Low-dose atropine drops have been shown to slow the progression of myopia in children.

In conclusion, while wearing weaker glasses may provide temporary comfort, it is essential to ensure that your vision is adequately corrected to prevent further deterioration of your eyesight. Consult with your eye care provider to discuss your concerns and explore the best options for managing your myopia effectively.
