Pregnancy Probability / Menstrual Cycle Issues
As of November, my menstrual period has not yet arrived.
The last menstrual period was from October 20 to October 26.
I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend on October 22, during which we used a condom the entire time, and he withdrew immediately after ejaculation without lingering.
My period continued as expected from October 27 to today, November 25 (30 days).
I took a pregnancy test on November 23, which showed only one line.
Although my period in October was delayed for a while, there was no sexual activity in September, so I am not concerned about being pregnant.
I would like to ask the doctor if there is a possibility of pregnancy, or if this is just another delay in my menstrual cycle.
Miss Chen, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2022/11/25
Dr. Lin Manying reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Ms.
Chen: Hello, if your period is delayed by a week (with October 20 as the first day), please take a pregnancy test first.
If the result is negative, then consider taking medication to induce menstruation.

Understanding your concerns about pregnancy chances and menstrual cycle irregularities is essential, especially when you are actively trying to understand your reproductive health. Based on the details you've provided, let's break down the situation.
First, it’s important to note that the menstrual cycle can be influenced by various factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, and even lifestyle factors. A typical menstrual cycle ranges from 21 to 35 days, and variations can occur from month to month. In your case, you mentioned that your last menstrual period started on October 20 and lasted until October 26, with sexual intercourse occurring on October 22 while using a condom. Since you have not experienced your expected period by November 25, it is understandable to be concerned about the possibility of pregnancy.
The use of condoms is a reliable method of contraception when used correctly. However, no contraceptive method is 100% effective. The fact that you had a normal menstrual period after the sexual encounter and that you have taken a pregnancy test on November 23, which returned negative, suggests that the likelihood of pregnancy is low. Pregnancy tests are generally reliable when taken after a missed period, and since you have not missed your period yet, the test result aligns with your current situation.
Given that your menstrual cycle can sometimes be irregular, it is possible that you are experiencing a delay in your period due to non-pregnancy-related factors. Stress, changes in routine, or even minor illnesses can lead to missed or delayed periods. If your period does not arrive within a week or so, it may be worth taking another pregnancy test or consulting with a healthcare provider for further evaluation.
If you are still concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, consider the following steps:
1. Wait a Few Days: If your period does not arrive soon, wait a few days and take another pregnancy test. This will give your body more time to produce detectable levels of the hormone hCG if you are pregnant.
2. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your period remains absent and tests continue to show negative results, it may be beneficial to see a healthcare provider. They can perform a more sensitive blood test for pregnancy and evaluate other potential causes for your missed period.
3. Monitor Your Cycle: Keep track of your menstrual cycle over the next few months. This can help you identify patterns or irregularities that may need further investigation.
4. Consider Lifestyle Factors: Reflect on any recent changes in your life that could affect your menstrual cycle, such as stress, diet, exercise, or sleep patterns.
In summary, while the chances of pregnancy seem low given your circumstances, it is essential to monitor your body and seek medical advice if your period does not return or if you have further concerns. Understanding your menstrual cycle and how it can be influenced by various factors is crucial for managing your reproductive health effectively.
