Adverse reactions after retinal laser surgery?

Hello, doctor.
I apologize for the interruption.
I underwent laser treatment for peripheral retinal degeneration to prevent a tear at the end of October.
After the procedure, I experienced a persistent sensation of visual field loss in the lower right corner of my vision.
It felt like there was a certain area that I couldn't see.
After a week or two, it improved.
During my follow-up appointment at the end of November, the doctor said everything was fine.
However, now the sensation in the lower right corner of my eye has returned.
I would like to ask if this situation is normal after the laser treatment, and whether I need to schedule another follow-up appointment.
Thank you for taking the time to respond, and I appreciate your help.
🙏

Dr. Gao Pilin reply Ophthalmology

Hello: Retinal laser treatment can cause localized visual field defects.
However, there should not be significant effects in the peripheral vision.
If any changes occur, it is advisable to return for a follow-up examination.

Post-Laser Surgery Complications: Understanding Visual Field Loss
Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your visual field after undergoing laser treatment for peripheral retinal degeneration. It’s understandable to feel anxious about changes in your vision, especially after a surgical procedure. Let's break down your situation and discuss what you might be experiencing.

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that after any laser surgery, including those aimed at preventing retinal tears or detachment, some patients may experience temporary visual disturbances. These can include visual field loss, blurred vision, or even sensations of seeing shadows or dark spots. This is often due to the healing process of the retina and surrounding tissues, which can take time.
In your case, the sensation of visual field loss in the right lower quadrant of your vision could be attributed to several factors:
1. Healing Process: After laser treatment, the retina and surrounding tissues undergo a healing process. During this time, it is not uncommon for patients to experience fluctuations in their vision. The fact that you noticed an improvement after a couple of weeks suggests that your eye was adjusting to the changes made during the procedure.

2. Residual Effects: Sometimes, the laser treatment can cause temporary changes in the way light is processed by the retina. This can lead to sensations of visual field loss or distortion. If your doctor has confirmed that there are no structural issues with your retina during your follow-up visits, it is likely that these sensations are part of the normal healing process.

3. Potential Complications: While most patients recover well, there is always a risk of complications following laser surgery. If you are experiencing a recurrence of visual field loss, it is essential to consult with your ophthalmologist. They may want to perform a thorough examination, including visual field testing and possibly imaging studies, to rule out any complications such as retinal detachment or other issues.

4. Psychological Factors: Sometimes, anxiety about the surgery and its outcomes can heighten awareness of visual changes, leading to a perception of visual field loss. It’s important to discuss any concerns with your doctor, who can provide reassurance and guidance.

Given that you have experienced a recurrence of the visual field sensation, it is advisable to schedule another follow-up appointment with your ophthalmologist. They can assess your current condition and determine whether any further intervention is necessary. It’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your vision.

In summary, while some visual disturbances can be a normal part of the recovery process after laser surgery, it is crucial to stay vigilant and communicate with your healthcare provider about any changes you experience. Regular follow-ups are essential to ensure that your eyes are healing properly and to address any potential complications early on. Your vision is precious, and maintaining open lines of communication with your doctor will help ensure the best possible outcome for your eye health. Thank you for your question, and I wish you a smooth recovery!
