I've had floaters for nearly ten years, and suddenly I see parallel lines when reading?
Hello, doctor: I have myopia in both eyes, measuring -3.50 and -3.75 diopters, and I have been experiencing floaters for nearly ten years.
However, yesterday while reading and taking notes, I suddenly saw horizontal lines appearing in my vision, which moved along with my gaze.
After closing my eyes, I noticed the afterimage of the lines gradually fading away.
After resting my eyes for a few minutes and then reopening them, the lines were no longer present.
Since I have never experienced such lines before, I would like to know what this condition might be.
Thank you!

Hello: This phenomenon may be caused by posterior vitreous detachment, and it usually resolves on its own after a while.
Typically, there are no significant long-term effects.
However, if you experience a sudden increase in floaters or see flashes of light, it is important to seek medical attention for an examination.

More Info
It sounds like you are experiencing some new visual symptoms, specifically the appearance of horizontal lines that move with your gaze. Given your history of myopia and floaters, it's understandable to be concerned about these new developments.
The phenomenon you described could be related to a few different factors. First, the appearance of lines or patterns in your vision can sometimes be attributed to visual disturbances known as "visual migraines" or "migraine aura." These can occur even in individuals who do not experience headaches. The lines you saw may have been a transient visual disturbance that resolved quickly, especially since you mentioned that they disappeared after resting your eyes.
Another possibility is that what you experienced could be related to changes in the vitreous gel inside your eye. As we age, the vitreous can become more liquid and may pull away from the retina, leading to the perception of floaters or lines. This is often benign, but in some cases, it can indicate a more serious condition, such as a retinal tear or detachment, particularly if accompanied by flashes of light or a sudden increase in floaters.
Given that you have a history of floaters, it is crucial to monitor any changes in your vision closely. If you experience any additional symptoms, such as flashes of light, a sudden increase in floaters, or a shadow or curtain effect in your peripheral vision, you should seek immediate medical attention from an eye care professional.
In general, if these lines do not return and you do not experience any other concerning symptoms, it may have been a benign occurrence. However, it is always wise to err on the side of caution when it comes to changes in vision. A comprehensive eye exam can help rule out any underlying issues and provide peace of mind.
In summary, while the lines you experienced could be a benign visual phenomenon, it is essential to stay vigilant and consult with an eye care professional if you notice any further changes or symptoms. Regular eye exams are crucial, especially for individuals with myopia and a history of floaters, to ensure that your eye health remains optimal.
