Weight loss and other issues caused by anxiety disorders?
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask you some questions: Around March of this year, I started feeling a tightness in my throat, constantly salivating, and experiencing nausea (especially before and after meals and while brushing my teeth).
At its worst, I vomited several times in a day, and the condition fluctuated.
My appetite has noticeably decreased.
By September, I discovered that my weight had dropped from 80 kg a few months ago to 67 kg.
It was around that time that I began taking traditional Chinese medicine (because I was concerned about the side effects of Western medication affecting my studies).
Now, I only experience tightness in my throat and nausea during very stressful times (like before exams and deadlines), and it happens much less frequently.
I still salivate occasionally (which is much better than before), especially while showering and brushing my teeth.
My weight has stabilized around 68 kg.
I would like to ask you: 1.
Is this weight change reasonable, or do I need to undergo further examinations? 2.
I have been taking traditional Chinese medicine for several months now, but I still feel like I am one step away from fully recovering from the salivation and throat tightness (at the junction of my neck and chin).
How can I resolve this and fully recover? Thank you for your response and assistance!

1.
Is this weight change reasonable? Or do I need to undergo some other examinations? If the weight change is due to intentional weight loss through increased exercise and dietary control, then it is reasonable.
If not, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation from a physician.
2.
I have been taking traditional Chinese medicine for several months now, but I still feel like I'm not fully recovering from the symptoms of excessive salivation and throat tightness (at the junction of the neck and jaw).
I would like to ask how I can resolve this issue.
Since I am currently seeing a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner, I recommend discussing this with your TCM doctor to avoid conflicting treatments.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding your weight loss and anxiety symptoms. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing significant anxiety-related symptoms, which have led to a noticeable decrease in your appetite and subsequent weight loss. Let's break down your questions and provide some guidance.
1. Weight Change: A weight loss of approximately 12-13 kg (from 80 kg to 67 kg) over a few months can be concerning, especially if it is unintentional. While some weight fluctuation can be normal, a loss of more than 5-10% of your body weight without a clear reason (like a change in diet or exercise) should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Given that you mentioned feeling nauseous and having a tight throat, these symptoms can be manifestations of anxiety, which can indeed affect your eating habits and overall health. It would be wise to consult with a healthcare provider to rule out any underlying medical conditions that may be contributing to your symptoms.
2. Managing Symptoms: You mentioned that you have been taking traditional Chinese medicine for several months. While some people find relief with alternative treatments, it’s important to ensure that these remedies are appropriate for your specific symptoms and that they do not interact negatively with any other treatments you may be receiving. If you feel that your symptoms have not improved significantly, it might be beneficial to discuss this with a healthcare provider who can evaluate your treatment plan. They may suggest a combination of therapies, including cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), which is effective for anxiety management, or possibly medication if deemed necessary.
In addition to seeking professional help, here are some strategies that may assist you in managing your anxiety and related symptoms:
- Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques: Practices such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga can help reduce anxiety and improve your overall sense of well-being. These techniques can also help you manage the physical symptoms of anxiety, such as the tightness in your throat.
- Regular Physical Activity: Engaging in regular exercise can significantly reduce anxiety levels and improve mood. It can also help regulate your appetite and promote a healthier weight.
- Balanced Diet: While your appetite may be affected, try to maintain a balanced diet with adequate nutrition. Eating small, frequent meals can help if large meals feel overwhelming. Focus on nutrient-dense foods that can provide energy and support your body during stressful times.
- Social Support: Connecting with friends, family, or support groups can provide emotional support and help you feel less isolated in your experiences. Sharing your feelings and concerns can be therapeutic.
- Professional Guidance: If you continue to experience significant anxiety and physical symptoms, consider seeking help from a mental health professional. They can provide tailored strategies and support to help you cope with your anxiety and its physical manifestations.
In conclusion, while your weight loss may be related to anxiety, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely and seek professional advice if they persist or worsen. Managing anxiety often requires a multifaceted approach, including lifestyle changes, therapy, and possibly medication. Remember, you are not alone in this journey, and there are resources available to help you regain your health and well-being. Take care!
