Blurred vision and eye discomfort?

Hello, doctor.
I am a 23-year-old female with myopia of -5.00 and -8.00.
Since the second half of last year, I have experienced a worsening of my myopia and a blurriness when looking at small objects, particularly in my left eye (which has -5.00 diopters).
I have visited several ophthalmology clinics and the ophthalmology department of a municipal hospital.
After vision tests, it was found that my prescription had not changed significantly, and a dilated fundus examination showed normal results.
The ophthalmology clinics suggested that it might be due to dry eyes, while the hospital ophthalmologist believed it had not yet reached the level of dry eye syndrome and recommended regular follow-up examinations.
However, my eye condition has not improved; I still feel that my distance vision is unclear, and I frequently experience discomfort in my left eye.
Could this indicate a more serious issue? What examinations do you recommend? I also have depression, and the persistent issues with my eyes have made me very anxious.

Hello: Since I cannot diagnose without examination, based on your description and the physician's advice, it is possible that you are experiencing mild dryness of the eyes.
After evaluations by several doctors, there should not be any significant issues, and regular follow-up is sufficient.
You may try purchasing artificial tears at the pharmacy to see if that helps.
It could also be due to eye fatigue; therefore, try to minimize the use of electronic devices unless necessary, allowing your eyes to rest more.
Over time, this may improve your condition.

Hello, thank you for sharing your concerns regarding your vision and eye discomfort. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing a combination of blurred vision, particularly in your left eye, and discomfort that has persisted despite normal findings in previous eye examinations.
Given your history of myopia (nearsightedness) and the recent changes in your vision, it's important to consider several potential factors that could be contributing to your symptoms.
1. Dry Eye Syndrome: Although the doctors you consulted have indicated that your condition may not yet qualify as dry eye syndrome, it is still a common cause of discomfort and blurred vision, especially in individuals who spend long hours in front of screens. Symptoms of dry eyes can include a gritty sensation, redness, and fluctuating vision. It might be worthwhile to try over-the-counter artificial tears or lubricating eye drops to see if they provide relief.

2. Visual Fatigue: Prolonged screen time can lead to digital eye strain, which may cause symptoms such as blurred vision, discomfort, and headaches. This condition is often exacerbated by inadequate lighting, improper viewing distances, and prolonged focus on screens without breaks. Implementing the 20-20-20 rule—taking a 20-second break to look at something 20 feet away every 20 minutes—can help alleviate some of these symptoms.

3. Refractive Error Changes: Even though your recent eye exams did not show significant changes in your prescription, it is possible for the perception of blurred vision to occur due to slight changes in the cornea or lens, or even due to the way your eyes are working together. A comprehensive refraction test might be beneficial to ensure that your current prescription is optimal.

4. Psychological Factors: Given your history of depression, it’s important to acknowledge that mental health can significantly impact physical health, including vision. Anxiety and depression can manifest in various ways, including increased sensitivity to visual disturbances. If your anxiety about your vision is contributing to your discomfort, addressing these psychological aspects through therapy or counseling may be beneficial.

5. Potential Underlying Conditions: While the likelihood of a serious underlying condition is low given your normal eye examinations, it is still essential to rule out any potential issues. Conditions such as retinal detachment, macular degeneration, or other retinal disorders can cause similar symptoms. If you continue to experience discomfort and blurred vision, it may be prudent to request a more detailed examination, including optical coherence tomography (OCT) or a visual field test, to assess the health of your retina and optic nerve.

In conclusion, while your symptoms may not indicate an immediate serious issue, they warrant further investigation and management. I recommend discussing your ongoing discomfort with your eye care provider, emphasizing your concerns about potential underlying issues and the impact of your mental health on your vision. They may suggest additional tests or refer you to a specialist if necessary. Meanwhile, consider implementing strategies to manage dry eyes and visual fatigue, and seek support for your mental health to help alleviate some of the anxiety surrounding your symptoms. Your well-being is paramount, and addressing both your physical and mental health will be crucial in finding relief.
