Nipple-related issues?
Hello doctor, I am currently 17 years old.
My hands are quite itchy, and I tend to squeeze pimples and comedones on my body.
My nipples do not have any pimples and are not itchy or painful, but there are white substances similar to comedones that can be squeezed.
I would like to know if this is related to hair follicles or something similar.

Understanding white bumps on the nipples, especially in teenagers, can be a source of concern and curiosity. At 17 years old, your body is undergoing various hormonal changes that can affect your skin and other tissues, including the area around your nipples. The white bumps you are describing could be related to a few different conditions, and it’s important to understand what they might be.
One common cause of white bumps on the nipples is the presence of sebaceous glands, which are small oil-producing glands that can become clogged. These glands are often more prominent in areas with hair follicles, and they can produce small white or yellowish bumps known as sebaceous cysts or milia. These bumps are generally harmless and do not require treatment unless they become bothersome or infected.
Another possibility is the presence of Montgomery glands, which are specialized sebaceous glands located on the areola (the pigmented area surrounding the nipple). These glands can appear as small, raised bumps and are completely normal. They play a role in lubrication during breastfeeding and can become more prominent due to hormonal changes, such as those occurring during puberty.
In some cases, the white bumps could be related to folliculitis, which is the inflammation of hair follicles. This condition can occur when hair follicles become infected or irritated, leading to small, red, or white bumps. While folliculitis can be itchy or uncomfortable, it is usually not serious and can often be managed with good hygiene and over-the-counter treatments.
It’s also worth noting that if you are experiencing any unusual symptoms, such as pain, itching, or changes in the appearance of the bumps, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional. They can provide a proper examination and determine if any treatment is necessary.
In terms of your habit of squeezing pimples or whiteheads on your body, it’s important to be cautious. Squeezing can lead to irritation, infection, or scarring. Instead, consider using gentle skincare products that are suitable for your skin type and consult a dermatologist if you have concerns about acne or other skin issues.
In summary, the white bumps you are noticing on your nipples are likely benign and could be related to normal anatomical structures or minor skin conditions. However, if you have any concerns or if the bumps change in appearance or become symptomatic, seeking medical advice is always a good idea. Maintaining good skin hygiene and being gentle with your skin can help prevent further issues.
