Medication Side Effect Consultation

After undergoing an upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, symptoms of a gastric ulcer were found.
The physician prescribed two medications: Nizatidine and Mosapride.
Mosapride is taken after meals.
Is it common for this medication to cause a noticeable feeling of hunger? I have unstable appetite, tend to feel full easily, and I'm unsure if this is related to the ulcer.
However, in the past few days after taking Mosapride, I have experienced a significant increase in hunger, to the point of feeling nauseous.
Is there a connection between the medication's effect on gastric emptying and the sensation of hunger?

Cooper, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/14

Dr. Chen Shidian reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

It may be due to the effects of the medication; consider reducing the dosage or temporarily discontinuing it.
If necessary, a medication switch may be warranted.

When dealing with medications for stomach ulcers, it is crucial to understand how these drugs interact with your body and the potential side effects they may cause. In your case, you have been prescribed two medications: Naisei (耐適恩) and Mogastin (摩胃舒清). It’s important to note that Mogastin is often used to help with gastric motility and can influence feelings of hunger.

Mogastin contains ingredients that may enhance gastric emptying, which can lead to a more rapid transition of food from the stomach to the intestines. This can sometimes result in an increased sensation of hunger, as the stomach empties more quickly than it normally would. If you are experiencing a significant increase in hunger, to the point of feeling nauseous, it could indeed be related to the effects of Mogastin on gastric motility.

Your history of unstable appetite and feeling full quickly could be linked to your ulcer condition. Stomach ulcers can affect how your stomach processes food, leading to discomfort and altered hunger signals. The medications you are taking may exacerbate these symptoms or alter your normal appetite patterns.

It is also worth mentioning that medications for ulcers, particularly those that enhance gastric motility, can sometimes lead to side effects such as nausea or changes in appetite. If you find that the hunger sensation is uncomfortable or leads to nausea, it may be beneficial to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They may consider adjusting your dosage or switching to a different medication that does not have the same effect on gastric emptying.

In addition to medication management, lifestyle and dietary changes can also play a significant role in managing symptoms of stomach ulcers and appetite stability. Eating smaller, more frequent meals can help mitigate feelings of hunger and fullness. Avoiding irritants such as spicy foods, caffeine, and alcohol is also advisable, as these can exacerbate ulcer symptoms.

Furthermore, stress management techniques can be beneficial, as stress can impact both appetite and ulcer symptoms. Practices such as mindfulness, yoga, or even simple breathing exercises can help reduce stress levels and improve overall well-being.

In summary, the increased sensation of hunger you are experiencing after taking Mogastin may be related to its effects on gastric motility. It is essential to communicate any uncomfortable side effects to your healthcare provider, who can help you find the most suitable treatment plan. Additionally, consider incorporating dietary adjustments and stress management strategies to support your overall health and well-being while managing your stomach ulcer.
