Urinary problems
Hello doctor, recently after taking a shower, I have been feeling a bit of pain in my private area when I go to the bathroom, but it goes away after a while.
Could this be due to excessive cleaning or a urinary tract infection? Also, if I wash my hands before using the restroom, can it still lead to an infection in the private area? I was on my knees cleaning the floor recently, and my hands came into contact with a dirty surface.
Even though I washed my hands before using the bathroom, I am still concerned about the possibility of not being clean enough.
Thank you.

Hello,
1.
The condition you mentioned could indicate either excessive cleaning of the urethral opening or a urethral infection.
A urinalysis may be necessary to differentiate between the two.
It is recommended to consult a urologist or a family medicine physician for evaluation.
2.
As long as proper hand hygiene is maintained, the risk of infection should be very low.
Thank you for your inquiry.

More Info
Experiencing pain in the genital area after bathing can be concerning, and it's important to understand the potential causes and implications. Based on the information provided, there are a few possibilities to consider regarding your symptoms.
Firstly, the pain you feel after bathing could be attributed to a few factors. One possibility is that it may be due to irritation from over-cleaning or using harsh soaps. The genital area is sensitive, and excessive washing or the use of irritating products can lead to inflammation or discomfort. This is particularly true if you are using products that disrupt the natural pH balance of the area.
Another potential cause could be a urinary tract infection (UTI). UTIs can cause pain during urination, and sometimes this discomfort can be felt even before urination, especially if the urethra is inflamed. If you are experiencing pain consistently after bathing, it might be worth considering whether you have any other symptoms of a UTI, such as increased frequency of urination, urgency, or any unusual discharge.
Regarding your concern about hygiene, washing your hands before using the restroom is an important practice that significantly reduces the risk of introducing bacteria to the genital area. If you have been in contact with dirty surfaces, such as when cleaning the floor, it is wise to wash your hands thoroughly before touching your genital area. However, as long as you maintain good hygiene practices, the risk of infection from hand contact should be minimal.
If you are still concerned about the possibility of an infection or if the pain persists, it would be advisable to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend a urinalysis to check for signs of infection or other underlying issues.
In summary, the pain you are experiencing could be due to over-cleaning or a potential urinary tract infection. Maintaining good hygiene practices, such as washing your hands before using the restroom, is crucial in preventing infections. If the pain continues or worsens, seeking medical advice would be the best course of action to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment.
Additionally, it’s essential to listen to your body. If you notice any changes in your symptoms, such as increased pain, changes in urination patterns, or any unusual discharge, do not hesitate to seek medical attention. Early intervention can often prevent more serious complications and provide peace of mind.
