Does prolonged sitting affect height growth?

Hello, doctor.
I used to hardly exercise during elementary, middle, and even high school, often sitting in a chair reading or using the computer.
As a result, my height is only 164 cm now.
I would like to ask if sitting for long periods like I used to could have contributed to my height not increasing.

Ping Chang Xin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/01/26

Dr. Shi Guozheng reply Orthopedics

Sitting for long periods is not good either; it's best to get up and move around for a bit every hour.
Otherwise, it can lead to symptoms of lower back pain.

Prolonged sitting, especially during critical growth periods in adolescence, can raise concerns about its potential impact on height growth. However, the relationship between sitting habits and height is not straightforward. Height is primarily influenced by genetic factors, nutrition, and overall health, rather than solely by physical activity levels or sitting posture.

1. Genetics: The most significant determinant of height is genetics. If your parents are of average height, it is likely that you will also be of similar height, regardless of your sitting habits. Genetic predisposition plays a crucial role in determining the maximum potential height an individual can achieve.

2. Nutrition: Adequate nutrition is vital for growth. Nutrients such as calcium, vitamin D, and protein are essential for bone health and growth. If your diet lacks these nutrients, it could hinder your growth potential, regardless of your activity level. Adolescents should focus on a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins to support their growth.

3. Physical Activity: While prolonged sitting itself does not directly stunt growth, a sedentary lifestyle can lead to other health issues, such as obesity, poor posture, and musculoskeletal problems. Engaging in regular physical activity is crucial for overall health and can help stimulate growth hormones, which are essential during puberty. Activities like stretching, swimming, and sports can promote better posture and overall physical development.

4. Posture and Growth Plates: Poor posture during prolonged sitting can lead to discomfort and musculoskeletal issues, but it is unlikely to affect the growth plates directly. Growth plates are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones, and they are primarily influenced by hormonal changes during puberty. While sitting in a slouched position may cause temporary discomfort or pain, it does not exert enough pressure on the growth plates to inhibit height growth.

5. Sleep and Hormones: Sleep is another critical factor in growth. The body releases growth hormone primarily during deep sleep, so ensuring adequate and quality sleep is essential for growth during adolescence. A consistent sleep schedule and a restful environment can help maximize growth hormone secretion.

6. Timing of Growth Spurts: Adolescents experience growth spurts at different times, influenced by their individual development. Girls typically experience their growth spurts earlier than boys, often around the onset of menstruation. If you are still in your teenage years, there may still be opportunities for growth, depending on your individual growth patterns and the timing of your puberty.

In summary, while prolonged sitting can lead to various health issues, it is not a direct cause of stunted growth. Instead, focus on maintaining a balanced diet, engaging in regular physical activity, ensuring good posture, and getting adequate sleep to support your growth potential. If you have concerns about your growth or overall health, it may be beneficial to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.
