Enhancing memory?
Dr.
Hou: Hello, I would like to ask you a question.
I am a veteran who is still studying part-time while working.
Recently, I have noticed that my memory is not as good as it used to be when I was younger.
I find it very difficult to study; every time I see a book, I feel dizzy, and after reading just a few pages, I want to sleep.
However, I am under a lot of academic and work pressure.
Is there any way or medication that can help me? Someone suggested that I could take Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan.
Is that appropriate? I have seen a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner who said I have stomach heat; can I take it? Or do you have any better suggestions? Thank you very much.
RICHY, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/11/12
Dr. Hou Yuchang reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Hello! Generally speaking, Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan is indicated for "excessive thinking, palpitations, forgetfulness, excessive sweating from the heart, constipation or diarrhea, and mouth and tongue ulcers." It is recommended for students to take regularly.
As for individuals with "stomach fire," they typically experience "mouth and tongue ulcers, swollen and painful gums, easy bleeding of the gums, bad breath, flushed face, constipation, and yellow urine." If you have the above symptoms, it can be said that you have "excessive stomach fire." However, since you did not specify your symptoms, it is not possible to determine whether someone with "stomach fire" can take "Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan." It is indeed possible because it contains a higher amount of yin-nourishing herbs, but it cannot "clear stomach fire." Therefore, if you have symptoms of "excessive stomach fire," you will need a different prescription, and you can discuss this with your physician.
Sincerely, Dr.
Hou Yu-Chang, Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Taoyuan Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

More Info
Boosting memory and cognitive function is a common concern, especially for students and individuals balancing work and study. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers various approaches and herbal remedies that may help enhance memory and concentration. Here’s a comprehensive overview of TCM solutions for boosting memory, particularly for students like yourself.
Understanding Memory in TCM
In TCM, the brain is often referred to as the "sea of marrow," and its health is closely linked to the kidneys, which are believed to store essence (jing) that nourishes the brain. A deficiency in kidney essence can lead to cognitive decline and memory issues. Therefore, treatments often focus on nourishing the kidneys and enhancing the brain's vitality.
Herbal Remedies
1. Tian Wang Bu Xin Dan (Heavenly Emperor's Heart-Supplementing Pill): This formula is traditionally used to nourish the heart and calm the spirit. It is beneficial for individuals experiencing anxiety, insomnia, or memory issues due to emotional stress. However, if you have a "stomach fire" condition, it’s essential to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner, as this formula may not be suitable for everyone.
2. Six-Flavor Rehmannia Pill (Liu Wei Di Huang Wan): This is another popular TCM formula that nourishes the kidneys and supports the brain. It contains ingredients like Rehmannia root and Chinese yam, which are known to enhance kidney function and, consequently, cognitive abilities.
3. Gou Qi Zi (Goji Berries): These berries are often used in TCM for their nourishing properties. They are believed to improve eyesight and enhance memory. You can incorporate them into your diet by adding them to teas or soups.
4. Walnuts and Black Sesame Seeds: Both are considered excellent for brain health in TCM. Walnuts are thought to nourish the brain, while black sesame seeds are believed to enrich the blood and improve overall vitality. You can make a nutritious porridge with these ingredients for breakfast.
Dietary Recommendations
In addition to herbal remedies, your diet plays a crucial role in cognitive function. Here are some dietary tips:
- Balanced Nutrition: Ensure your meals are rich in whole grains, lean proteins, and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Foods high in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, walnuts, and flaxseeds, are particularly beneficial for brain health.
- Stay Hydrated: Dehydration can lead to fatigue and decreased cognitive function. Make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Avoid Heavy Foods: Since you mentioned having "stomach fire," it’s advisable to avoid spicy, greasy, or overly rich foods that can exacerbate this condition. Instead, focus on light, easily digestible meals.
Lifestyle Modifications
1. Regular Exercise: Engaging in physical activity can improve blood circulation, including to the brain, which may enhance cognitive function. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.
2. Adequate Sleep: Sleep is crucial for memory consolidation. Aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night to help your brain recover and function optimally.
3. Stress Management: High levels of stress can negatively impact memory. Consider practices such as meditation, yoga, or deep-breathing exercises to help manage stress levels.
4. Mindfulness and Focus Techniques: When studying, try techniques like the Pomodoro Technique, where you study for 25 minutes and then take a 5-minute break. This can help maintain focus and reduce fatigue.
Conclusion
While TCM offers various remedies and dietary suggestions to boost memory and cognitive function, it’s essential to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner or healthcare provider to tailor a plan that suits your specific needs and conditions. They can provide personalized advice based on a thorough assessment of your health. Remember, improving memory is a multifaceted approach that includes herbal remedies, dietary changes, lifestyle modifications, and stress management techniques. By integrating these strategies, you can enhance your cognitive abilities and manage the pressures of studying and working effectively.
