Menstrual issues
Hello, I would like to ask about having sexual intercourse with my girlfriend on January 10th.
Her next menstrual period was expected on January 31st, but it is now February 4th and she still hasn't gotten her period.
We used condoms throughout the entire time.
Before penetration, we engaged in mutual manual and oral stimulation, and then used a condom for intercourse.
My girlfriend has previously taken traditional Chinese medicine to regulate her menstrual cycle, so her periods have been quite regular.
However, she has stopped taking the medicine for over a month now.
Could the delay in her period be due to stopping the medication, or is there a possibility of pregnancy?
Ting, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/02/04

Hello, to determine if you are pregnant, you can take a pregnancy test.
The likelihood of being pregnant seems low.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding menstrual irregularities, particularly in the context of potential pregnancy or the effects of medication, there are several factors to consider. In your case, you mentioned that your girlfriend had sexual intercourse on January 10 and was expected to have her menstrual period on January 31, but as of February 4, her period has not yet arrived. You also noted that both of you used condoms throughout the sexual encounter, which significantly reduces the likelihood of pregnancy, although no contraceptive method is 100% effective.
First, let's address the possibility of pregnancy. While using condoms greatly decreases the risk of pregnancy, it is important to remember that no contraceptive method is infallible. Factors such as improper use of the condom, breakage, or slippage can lead to unintended pregnancy. However, if you both used the condom correctly and consistently, the chances of pregnancy are low. If your girlfriend's menstrual cycle is typically regular, a delay could be concerning, but it is essential to consider other factors that might contribute to this irregularity.
One significant factor in your girlfriend's case is her recent cessation of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) that she had been using to regulate her menstrual cycle. Stopping any form of medication, including herbal treatments, can lead to changes in hormonal balance, which may result in a delayed period. The body may take some time to adjust after discontinuing such treatments, especially if they were being used to manage menstrual regularity.
Additionally, stress and lifestyle changes can also impact menstrual cycles. If your girlfriend has experienced any significant stressors, changes in weight, or alterations in her daily routine, these could also contribute to a delay in her period. It is not uncommon for women to experience irregularities in their menstrual cycles due to various factors, including emotional stress, physical health, and changes in medication.
Given that your girlfriend's period is late, it would be prudent for her to take a home pregnancy test to rule out pregnancy as a possibility. These tests are generally reliable and can provide quick results. If the test is negative and her period does not arrive soon, it may be advisable for her to consult a healthcare provider. A doctor can help assess her situation, consider her medical history, and possibly conduct further tests to determine the cause of her delayed menstruation.
In summary, while there is a possibility of pregnancy, the more likely explanation for your girlfriend's delayed period could be the cessation of her herbal medication or other lifestyle factors. A home pregnancy test would be a good first step to clarify the situation. If the test is negative and her period remains absent, seeking medical advice would be the next best course of action to ensure her health and well-being.
