Menstrual cycle irregularities
In mid-January, a uterine fibroid measuring approximately 5 cm was detected.
After my menstrual period from January 23 to 29, I returned for a follow-up on January 30, and the fibroid had shrunk to 3 cm.
The doctor prescribed me SHITON (Norethisterone 5 mg) for three days.
After completing the medication, I experienced breast tenderness, and today (February 7), I have noticed bright red vaginal bleeding, which seems to be menstrual bleeding.
However, since this is very close to my last menstrual period, it does not appear to be part of my normal cycle.
I would like to know if this could be a side effect of taking this medication.

Hello, based on your description, it is common to experience withdrawal bleeding after stopping progesterone.
If the bleeding persists or increases in volume, it is advisable to consult a physician for evaluation.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health, Dr.

More Info
Norethisterone is a synthetic progestogen commonly used in various gynecological treatments, including the management of abnormal menstrual cycles, endometriosis, and to regulate menstrual bleeding. It is important to understand how this medication works and its potential side effects, particularly in the context of your recent experience with abnormal bleeding.
When you take Norethisterone, it can influence your menstrual cycle by mimicking the effects of natural progesterone. This can lead to changes in your menstrual pattern, including the timing and nature of your bleeding. In your case, the breast tenderness and the unexpected bleeding you experienced after taking Norethisterone could be attributed to the medication's hormonal effects. It is not uncommon for women to experience side effects such as breast tenderness, mood changes, and alterations in menstrual bleeding patterns when starting or adjusting hormonal treatments.
The bleeding you described as bright red and occurring shortly after your last menstrual period could be a breakthrough bleed, which is a common side effect of hormonal medications like Norethisterone. Breakthrough bleeding can occur when the hormonal levels fluctuate, and it may not necessarily indicate a return of your menstrual cycle. Instead, it could be a response to the introduction of the medication into your system.
It is also worth noting that the presence of a uterine fibroid can complicate menstrual cycles. Fibroids can cause heavy menstrual bleeding, prolonged periods, and other symptoms. While Norethisterone may help in managing these symptoms, it is essential to monitor how your body responds to the medication, especially in the context of your fibroid.
If the bleeding continues or if you experience any other concerning symptoms, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to evaluate your situation further, possibly through imaging or additional tests, to ensure that the fibroid is not causing complications and that the Norethisterone is having the desired effect.
In summary, the side effects you are experiencing, including breast tenderness and abnormal bleeding, could very well be related to the use of Norethisterone. It is essential to keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider regarding any side effects or changes in your menstrual cycle. They can provide guidance on whether to continue the medication or consider alternative treatments based on your specific circumstances and overall health. Regular monitoring and follow-up are key to managing your condition effectively and ensuring that any potential complications are addressed promptly.
