Concerns About Rubber Ring in Circumcision Surgery: Healing Issues - Urology

The issue with the rubber ring of the circumcision device?

Hello, doctor.
I chose the circumcision procedure with a rubber ring, and today is the ninth day post-surgery.
However, the wound has not healed and continues to secrete serous fluid.
After researching online, I found that typically, after circumcision, the rubber ring is cut into segments, but mine has not been cut at all.
Will this affect the eventual detachment of the staples (which have not fallen off yet) or the healing speed of the wound? Thank you!

When it comes to circumcision surgery using a rubber ring technique, it is essential to understand the healing process and the potential complications that may arise. From your description, it seems that you are experiencing delayed healing and ongoing discharge from the surgical site nine days post-operation. This situation can be concerning, and it's important to address your questions regarding the rubber ring and its impact on healing.

Firstly, the use of a rubber ring in circumcision is intended to facilitate the removal of the foreskin while minimizing bleeding and promoting healing. The ring creates a controlled environment that allows for tissue necrosis and eventual separation of the foreskin from the glans. Typically, the ring should fall off within a week or two after the procedure, depending on individual healing rates. If the ring has not yet fallen off, it could indicate that the tissue is not necrosing as expected, which may be contributing to your ongoing discharge.

The fact that your rubber ring has not been cut into segments may be a point of concern. In some techniques, cutting the ring can help facilitate the necrosis process and promote quicker healing. If the ring remains intact and is not allowing for proper tissue separation, it could potentially hinder the healing process. However, this does not necessarily mean that your healing will be severely impacted, as individual responses to surgery can vary widely.

The continuous secretion of tissue fluid (exudate) from the surgical site is not uncommon, especially in the early stages of healing. However, if the discharge is excessive, has a foul odor, or is accompanied by increased redness, swelling, or pain, these could be signs of infection. In such cases, it is crucial to consult your surgeon or healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation. They may need to assess the wound, check for signs of infection, and determine if any intervention is necessary.

Regarding the concern about the rubber ring affecting the eventual detachment of the surgical staples (if used), it is important to note that the staples are designed to hold the tissue together during the healing process. If the rubber ring is not allowing for proper necrosis, it may delay the natural process of healing and the eventual detachment of any staples. However, this is something that your surgeon will be best equipped to evaluate.

In conclusion, while the rubber ring technique is generally effective for circumcision, individual healing can vary. If you are experiencing prolonged healing or any concerning symptoms, it is essential to reach out to your healthcare provider for further assessment. They can provide guidance on whether any adjustments need to be made to your care plan or if additional treatments are necessary to promote healing. Remember, open communication with your surgeon is key to addressing any concerns you may have during your recovery process.
