Post-Circumcision Tightness: Concerns About Pain and Healing - Urology

After circumcision, the ring around the penis feels very tight during an erection?

It has been three weeks since I had my circumcision, and most of the stitches have come out.
There is only a scab left on the area where the wound opened.
Now, when I get an erection, the ring around the shaft feels like a rubber band, creating a noticeable indentation.
It hurts because there are still scabs on the wound.
I'm afraid to pull on it.
Will it loosen up on its own? Otherwise, it will hurt just from getting an erection.
I'm really worried that after it heals, I won't be able to have intercourse.

Xiao Kai, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/04/07

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, it is possible that the scarring from the surgery is causing the contraction.
Generally, it will gradually loosen over time.
A small number of cases may require a second surgery to incise the tight area.
If there is pain during erection, it is best to return for evaluation and treatment as soon as possible, especially before the wound has fully healed.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.

Sincerely,
Dr.

Post-circumcision tightness can be a common concern for many individuals after the procedure. It’s understandable to feel anxious about the healing process and the potential impact on sexual function. Here’s a comprehensive overview of what you might be experiencing and some suggestions for managing your symptoms.

Firstly, it’s important to recognize that after circumcision, the area around the glans (the head of the penis) can be sensitive and may feel tight, especially if there are still scabs or healing tissue present. The sensation of tightness, akin to a rubber band constricting, can occur due to swelling, scar tissue formation, or simply the adjustment of the skin and tissues post-surgery. This tightness can lead to discomfort or pain during erections, which is likely what you are experiencing.

Typically, the healing process after circumcision takes about 4 to 6 weeks, but this can vary from person to person. During this time, it’s crucial to allow your body to heal properly. Here are some steps you can take to help alleviate the tightness and discomfort:
1. Gentle Stretching: Once the initial healing has occurred and if your doctor approves, you may consider gentle stretching of the skin around the circumcision site. This can help to gradually increase the elasticity of the skin and reduce the feeling of tightness. However, be cautious and avoid any forceful pulling or stretching that could cause pain or reopen the wound.

2. Moisturizing: Applying a gentle, unscented moisturizer or a healing ointment (such as petroleum jelly) to the area can help keep the skin supple and may aid in the healing process. This can also reduce friction during erections, which might alleviate some discomfort.

3. Avoiding Irritants: Be mindful of any products that may irritate the area, such as scented soaps or lotions. Stick to mild, hypoallergenic products during your healing phase.

4. Pain Management: If you experience significant pain, over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be helpful. However, consult with your healthcare provider before taking any medication, especially if you have other health conditions or are taking other medications.

5. Follow-Up with Your Doctor: If the tightness and pain persist or worsen, it’s essential to follow up with your healthcare provider. They can assess the healing process and determine if there are any underlying issues, such as excessive scar tissue or infection, that may need to be addressed.

6. Patience: Healing takes time, and it’s important to be patient with your body as it recovers. Many individuals find that the tightness diminishes over time as the tissues heal and adapt.

Regarding your concern about sexual activity, many men report that their sensitivity and comfort improve significantly after the healing process is complete. If you find that the tightness does not improve or if it continues to cause pain during erections, your doctor may discuss further options, including potential treatments for scar tissue or other interventions.

In summary, while it’s normal to experience some tightness and discomfort after circumcision, there are steps you can take to manage your symptoms. If you have ongoing concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and support. They can provide reassurance and help you navigate the healing process effectively.
