What are the effects of accidentally ingesting borage oil during early pregnancy and what are the immediate management strategies?
Hello Doctor, I am currently just over three months pregnant.
I take a low dose of aspirin (Bayer) every morning.
Due to increased discharge in the early stages, I am concerned about infection, so I have been taking cranberry supplements that I used before pregnancy.
I am currently taking two capsules (each containing 200mg of borage oil).
When I went to the pharmacy today to buy more, I casually asked the pharmacist if it was safe to continue taking them during pregnancy.
He looked at the ingredients and said that the borage oil in this compound is not recommended for pregnant women, so he did not sell it to me.
However, I have already taken two capsules.
Will this have any impact? If I drink more water, will it help metabolize it? Thank you, Doctor.
🙏

More Info
Borage oil, derived from the seeds of the borage plant (Borago officinalis), is known for its high gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) content, an omega-6 fatty acid that has been studied for its potential health benefits. However, its safety during pregnancy is a topic of concern and debate among healthcare professionals.
During early pregnancy, the body undergoes significant hormonal changes that can affect various metabolic processes, including lipid metabolism. As you mentioned, you have been taking borage oil in the form of a supplement, which raises questions about its effects on both maternal health and fetal development.
The primary concern regarding borage oil during pregnancy is its potential to affect blood clotting. Borage oil can have anticoagulant effects, which may increase the risk of bleeding, especially during labor and delivery. Additionally, there is limited research on the long-term effects of borage oil on fetal development, making it difficult to ascertain its safety profile during pregnancy.
In your case, having consumed two capsules of borage oil (each containing 200 mg) is unlikely to cause immediate harm, especially since you are in the early stages of pregnancy. However, it is advisable to discontinue its use based on the recommendation of your pharmacist and the general caution advised for pregnant women regarding supplements that have not been extensively studied for safety during pregnancy.
Regarding your question about drinking more water to help metabolize the borage oil, while staying hydrated is always beneficial for overall health, it will not specifically expedite the elimination of borage oil from your system. The body metabolizes substances at its own rate, and hydration primarily supports kidney function and overall metabolic processes rather than directly influencing the breakdown of specific oils or supplements.
If you have concerns about the effects of borage oil or any other supplements during your pregnancy, it is essential to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and current pregnancy status.
In summary, while the consumption of borage oil in small amounts may not lead to immediate adverse effects, it is best to err on the side of caution and avoid its use during pregnancy. Always prioritize open communication with your healthcare provider regarding any supplements or medications you are taking, especially during this crucial time for both you and your developing baby. Regular prenatal check-ups are also essential to monitor your health and the health of your fetus throughout your pregnancy.
