Why is my skin darker now, even though I don't spend time in the sun, compared to when I used to love being outdoors?
My family used to tell me that my skin had become very dark, but I didn't pay much attention to it at the time, feeling that I didn't look much different from others.
However, later on, when I got closer to other people, I really noticed that my skin was indeed quite dark.
Then I opened my graduation yearbook and saw that my skin was very fair when I was a child.
Now, I spend almost all my time indoors, so it's impossible for me to get tanned.
How could my skin have darkened? I'm actually darker than when I used to spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun and exercising.
What could be the problem? Which specialist should I see for an examination? Thank you.

The phenomenon of your skin becoming darker despite spending most of your time indoors can be attributed to several factors, and it’s essential to understand the underlying mechanisms that contribute to skin pigmentation changes.
Firstly, one of the most common reasons for skin darkening is a condition known as hyperpigmentation. This occurs when there is an excess production of melanin, the pigment responsible for the color of your skin, hair, and eyes. Hyperpigmentation can be triggered by various factors, including hormonal changes, skin injuries, inflammation, and certain medications. For instance, conditions like melasma, which is often influenced by hormonal fluctuations, can lead to dark patches on the skin, particularly in women.
Another possible explanation for your skin darkening could be related to the effects of environmental factors, even if you are primarily indoors. Indoor lighting, particularly fluorescent lights, can sometimes contribute to skin changes. Additionally, if you are exposed to certain chemicals or irritants in your environment, such as cleaning products or skincare ingredients, they may cause skin irritation and subsequent hyperpigmentation.
Moreover, the aging process itself can lead to changes in skin pigmentation. As we age, our skin undergoes various changes, including a decrease in collagen production and an increase in the visibility of pigmentation irregularities. This means that even if you are not exposed to sunlight, your skin may still develop darker areas over time.
Another factor to consider is lifestyle habits. Stress, sleep patterns, and diet can significantly impact skin health. For example, a diet lacking in essential vitamins and minerals can affect skin tone and texture. Similarly, inadequate sleep can lead to increased stress levels, which may exacerbate skin issues, including pigmentation changes.
If you are concerned about the changes in your skin color, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist. A dermatologist specializes in skin conditions and can provide a thorough examination to determine the cause of your hyperpigmentation. They may recommend tests or treatments based on their findings. Treatments for hyperpigmentation can include topical creams containing ingredients like hydroquinone, retinoids, or vitamin C, which can help lighten dark spots. In some cases, procedures such as chemical peels, laser therapy, or microdermabrasion may be suggested to improve skin tone.
In conclusion, while it may seem perplexing that your skin has darkened despite limited sun exposure, various factors could be at play, including hormonal changes, environmental influences, aging, and lifestyle habits. Seeking professional advice from a dermatologist will provide you with a clearer understanding of your skin condition and the best course of action to address your concerns. Remember, maintaining a healthy skincare routine and protecting your skin from potential irritants can also play a crucial role in managing skin pigmentation.
