Nose
Hello, I sometimes notice dried blood in my nasal mucus when I blow my nose in the morning.
This doesn't happen often, maybe once every 3-4 weeks or once or twice a month.
Why could this be happening? Thank you!

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Otolaryngology
Lydia Ho: The causes of nosebleeds can include trauma, a deviated septum, nasopharyngeal cancer, or dry air.
A direct examination of the nasal area is necessary to confirm the diagnosis, as the severity of the aforementioned conditions varies greatly.
It is recommended to conduct a thorough follow-up to determine the underlying cause in order to provide appropriate treatment.

More Info
Occasional morning nosebleeds can be concerning, but they are often benign and can be attributed to several common causes. Understanding these causes can help you manage and potentially reduce the frequency of these occurrences.
Common Causes of Morning Nosebleeds
1. Dry Air: One of the most prevalent reasons for nosebleeds, especially in the morning, is dry air. This is particularly common during winter months or in arid climates. When the air is dry, the mucous membranes inside your nose can dry out and crack, leading to bleeding. Using a humidifier in your bedroom can help maintain moisture in the air and prevent your nasal passages from drying out.
2. Nasal Irritation: Allergies or irritants such as smoke, strong odors, or pollution can cause inflammation in the nasal passages. This irritation can lead to nosebleeds, particularly if you frequently blow your nose or if you have a habit of picking your nose.
3. Nasal Trauma: Sometimes, minor trauma to the nose, such as vigorous nose blowing or scratching, can cause bleeding. If you have a habit of blowing your nose forcefully, it might be worth trying to be gentler.
4. Underlying Health Conditions: While less common, certain medical conditions can contribute to nosebleeds. These include blood clotting disorders, hypertension, or even certain medications that affect blood clotting. If you have any underlying health issues or are taking medications, it might be worth discussing this with your healthcare provider.
5. Anatomical Issues: Some individuals may have anatomical variations in their nasal structure, such as a deviated septum, which can predispose them to nosebleeds.
Solutions and Management
1. Humidification: As mentioned, using a humidifier can help keep the air moist, especially during dry seasons. This can significantly reduce the incidence of nosebleeds.
2. Nasal Saline Sprays: Over-the-counter saline nasal sprays can help keep your nasal passages moist. Regular use can prevent dryness and irritation.
3. Gentle Nose Blowing: Be mindful of how you blow your nose. Try to do it gently to avoid trauma to the nasal membranes.
4. Avoid Irritants: If you know certain allergens or irritants trigger your symptoms, try to minimize your exposure to them. This may include using air purifiers or avoiding smoking and strong perfumes.
5. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of fluids can help keep your mucous membranes hydrated from the inside out.
6. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If your nosebleeds become more frequent, are accompanied by other symptoms (like severe headaches or unusual bruising), or if you have concerns about underlying health conditions, it’s important to consult a healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, such as blood tests or imaging studies, to rule out any serious conditions.
When to Seek Medical Attention
While occasional nosebleeds are usually not a cause for concern, you should seek medical attention if:
- The nosebleeds are frequent and persistent.
- You experience heavy bleeding that does not stop after 20 minutes of applying pressure.
- You have other symptoms, such as bruising easily, fatigue, or signs of anemia.
In summary, occasional morning nosebleeds can often be managed with simple lifestyle changes and preventive measures. However, if they persist or worsen, it’s crucial to seek medical advice to rule out any underlying health issues.
