It is normal for the area to be swollen after a circumcision?

Hello doctor, I recently had a circumcision and it's been a month.
Overall, there haven't been any issues, and the stitches have all fallen out.
I've started masturbating, but it's not very convenient because there's less skin to work with.
Even after a month, the redder skin still feels very sensitive, and if I masturbate a bit too vigorously, that sensitive area becomes swollen.
Today, I wore jeans and experienced some friction, which also caused swelling.
Is this normal? How can I prevent this? Thank you, doctor.

Hello: Generally, swelling tends to improve gradually over the course of more than a month, with a decrease in severity.
If there is no improvement, the severity does not lessen, and the pain remains intense, it is advisable to return for a follow-up appointment.
If there is a family history of diabetes, it is recommended to schedule a follow-up visit or check blood sugar levels.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Post-circumcision swelling can be a common concern for many individuals who have recently undergone the procedure. It is important to understand that some degree of swelling and sensitivity in the area is normal during the healing process, especially within the first few weeks to a month after circumcision. The skin around the glans (the head of the penis) can be particularly sensitive and may appear red or inflamed as it adjusts to being exposed after the removal of the foreskin.

Normal Healing Process
After circumcision, the healing process typically involves several stages. Initially, there may be swelling, redness, and tenderness in the area. This is part of the body's natural inflammatory response to surgery. As healing progresses, these symptoms usually diminish. However, it is not uncommon for the skin to remain sensitive for a longer period, especially if there is friction from clothing or during sexual activity, as you have described.

Factors Contributing to Swelling
1. Friction: As you mentioned, wearing tight clothing like jeans can cause friction against the sensitive skin, leading to swelling. It is advisable to wear loose-fitting underwear and pants to minimize irritation.

2. Activity Level: Engaging in sexual activity or masturbation can also lead to temporary swelling, especially if the movements are vigorous. If you notice that certain activities consistently lead to swelling, it may be beneficial to modify your technique or frequency until the sensitivity decreases.

3. Hygiene: Maintaining proper hygiene is crucial. Ensure that the area is clean and dry, as moisture can lead to irritation or infection, which can exacerbate swelling.

Prevention Strategies
To help prevent excessive swelling and discomfort, consider the following strategies:
1. Gentle Handling: When engaging in sexual activity or masturbation, be gentle. Avoid aggressive movements that can irritate the sensitive skin.

2. Lubrication: Using a water-based lubricant during masturbation can reduce friction and help prevent irritation.

3. Clothing Choices: Opt for loose-fitting underwear and pants to minimize friction against the sensitive area. Cotton fabrics are often more breathable and comfortable.

4. Cold Compress: If you experience significant swelling, applying a cold compress to the area for short periods can help reduce inflammation.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the swelling. If it persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as severe pain, discharge, or fever, it is essential to consult a healthcare professional.

When to Seek Medical Advice
While some swelling is normal, it is important to be vigilant. If you notice any of the following, you should seek medical advice:
- Persistent or worsening swelling after the initial healing period.

- Signs of infection, such as increased redness, warmth, or discharge.

- Severe pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medications.

- Any unusual changes in the appearance of the skin or glans.

In summary, some swelling and sensitivity after circumcision are normal, especially within the first month. By taking preventive measures and being mindful of your activities, you can help manage these symptoms. However, if you have ongoing concerns or if the swelling does not improve, it is always best to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance.
