Recovery issues after hemorrhoid banding?

Hello Dr.
Chang: After about a week since my last inquiry, I noticed that approximately half of the prolapse has resolved, while the other half remains.
I have now undergone the third ligation, and it is currently the second week.
I often feel a slight tingling and swelling around the anal area, and there is a mild soreness in the coccyx.
However, the remaining half of the prolapse has not improved.
Is this normal, or does it typically take some time for it to resolve as well?

Dr. Zhang Shuhao reply Surgery

After hemorrhoid ligation, the tissue will gradually become ischemic and fall off.
It is normal to experience a sensation of fullness or pressure during this time, but it typically does not reach the level of pain.
Prolapse may not completely resolve depending on the location of the ligation, but as long as there is no discomfort and it does not affect the quality of life, further ligation may not be necessary.

After undergoing hemorrhoid ligation, it's common to have concerns about recovery and the persistence of symptoms. Hemorrhoid ligation, also known as rubber band ligation, is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat hemorrhoids by cutting off their blood supply, which causes them to shrink and eventually fall off. While many patients experience relief from symptoms, the recovery process can vary significantly from person to person.

In your case, it’s encouraging to hear that you have noticed some improvement, with about half of the prolapsed tissue resolving after three ligation sessions. However, the presence of residual prolapse and the sensations you are experiencing—such as a slight prickling or fullness around the anal area and mild discomfort in the coccyx—are not uncommon during the recovery phase.
Typically, after hemorrhoid ligation, patients may experience some discomfort, which can include:
1. Pain and Discomfort: It's normal to feel some pain or discomfort in the anal area after the procedure. This can last for several days to weeks, depending on the individual’s pain tolerance and the extent of the procedure.

2. Swelling and Sensation: The sensation of fullness or pressure can occur as the body heals. This may be due to swelling or inflammation in the area, which is a natural part of the healing process.

3. Residual Prolapse: It’s not unusual for some degree of prolapse to persist after treatment. The ligation process can take time to fully resolve the hemorrhoids, and it may take several weeks for the remaining tissue to shrink or retract.

4. Bowel Movements: You may also notice changes in bowel habits or discomfort during bowel movements. It’s essential to maintain a high-fiber diet and stay hydrated to prevent straining, which can exacerbate symptoms.

In terms of your specific concerns about the remaining prolapse, it’s essential to give your body time to heal. The ligation process can take several weeks to show full results, and the remaining tissue may gradually improve as the ligation takes effect. However, if you continue to experience significant discomfort, or if the prolapse does not improve over the next few weeks, it would be advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to assess the area to ensure that there are no complications, such as infection or other issues that might require further intervention.

In summary, while some discomfort and residual symptoms are typical after hemorrhoid ligation, it’s crucial to monitor your condition. If you have any concerns about the severity of your symptoms or if they worsen, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor for further evaluation. They can provide personalized advice and determine if any additional treatment is necessary. Remember, recovery can take time, and being patient with your body is key to a successful outcome.
