Muscle soreness after a fall?

Hello, Director.
A couple of days ago, I had a motorcycle accident and sustained abrasions on my limbs.
There are no bruises or obvious wounds on my body, and I do not experience tenderness.
I also have no pain while breathing.
However, I am wondering why I have muscle soreness all over my body, occasional dull pain in the sternum, and sometimes pain in my abdomen that feels like muscle strain.
What could be the possible reasons for this? If I need to seek medical attention, which specialty should I consult? Thank you, Director!

Dr. Xiao Yongxun reply Family Medicine

Hello, if you still feel unwell after a few days of observation, it is recommended to visit a family medicine clinic for evaluation.
Thank you.

After a bike accident, experiencing muscle soreness is a common occurrence, especially if you have not sustained any visible injuries or bruises. The soreness you are feeling throughout your body, including the dull pain in your sternum and occasional discomfort in your abdominal muscles, can be attributed to several factors.

Firstly, during a fall or sudden stop, your body undergoes a significant amount of stress and strain. Even if you do not have visible injuries, the muscles can still be affected. This is often due to micro-tears in the muscle fibers, which occur when the muscles are suddenly stretched or contracted. This phenomenon is known as delayed onset muscle soreness (DOMS), which typically manifests 24 to 48 hours after the incident. The soreness can be exacerbated by the body's natural response to trauma, which includes inflammation and muscle tension.

The dull pain in your sternum could be related to muscle strain in the pectoral region or even the intercostal muscles, which are located between the ribs. These muscles can become strained during a fall, especially if you braced yourself with your arms or if your body twisted in an unusual way. Similarly, the discomfort in your abdominal area may be due to the same mechanism, where the core muscles were engaged to stabilize your body during the fall.

In terms of when to seek medical help, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional if the soreness persists beyond a few days, worsens, or if you begin to experience additional symptoms such as severe pain, swelling, or difficulty breathing. If you notice any signs of internal injury, such as significant abdominal pain, changes in bowel habits, or any other concerning symptoms, you should seek immediate medical attention.

For initial management of muscle soreness, you can consider the following:
1. Rest: Allow your body to recover by avoiding strenuous activities that may aggravate the soreness.

2. Ice Therapy: Applying ice packs to sore areas can help reduce inflammation and numb the pain.

3. Heat Therapy: After the initial 48 hours, applying heat can help relax and soothe tight muscles.

4. Over-the-Counter Pain Relief: Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen can help alleviate pain and reduce inflammation.

5. Gentle Stretching: Engaging in light stretching can help maintain flexibility and reduce muscle tightness.

If you decide to seek medical advice, you may want to consult a primary care physician or a sports medicine specialist. They can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination, and may recommend imaging studies if they suspect any underlying injuries. If necessary, they can also refer you to a physical therapist who can guide you through rehabilitation exercises to strengthen the affected muscles and improve your overall function.

In conclusion, muscle soreness after a bike accident is typically a result of muscle strain and micro-tears. While it is usually manageable with self-care measures, monitoring your symptoms and seeking medical advice if they persist or worsen is essential for ensuring a full recovery.
