Can I get pregnant?

Hello, my girlfriend got her period on November 29th, and we had unprotected intercourse on that day with ejaculation inside.
Is there a possibility of pregnancy? If we are concerned about pregnancy, can she take the morning-after pill during her period, and will it affect her menstrual cycle? Thank you for your time in answering.

When it comes to the question of whether you can get pregnant during your period, it's important to understand the menstrual cycle and the timing of ovulation. The menstrual cycle typically lasts about 28 days, but it can vary from person to person. Ovulation usually occurs around 14 days before the start of the next period. Sperm can live inside the female reproductive tract for up to five days, which means that if you have unprotected sex towards the end of your period, there is a possibility that sperm could still be viable when ovulation occurs.

In your case, since you had unprotected sex on November 29, which is likely close to the end of your girlfriend's period, the chances of pregnancy are relatively low but not impossible. If her cycle is shorter than average, or if she ovulates earlier, there could be a risk of pregnancy.
Regarding emergency contraception, commonly known as the "morning-after pill," it can be taken after unprotected intercourse to reduce the risk of pregnancy. It is most effective when taken as soon as possible after the unprotected sex, ideally within 72 hours, but some types can be effective up to 5 days after. Taking the morning-after pill during your girlfriend's period should not significantly affect her menstrual cycle, although some women may experience changes in their next period, such as earlier or later onset, or changes in flow.

It's also important to consider that while the morning-after pill is effective, it is not 100% guaranteed to prevent pregnancy. If your girlfriend is concerned about the possibility of being pregnant, she should take a pregnancy test if her next period is late or if she experiences any unusual symptoms.

In summary, while the risk of getting pregnant during a period is lower, it is not zero. If there is concern about potential pregnancy, taking emergency contraception is a viable option, and it should not adversely affect her menstrual cycle in a significant way. If there are any further concerns or questions, it would be wise for your girlfriend to consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and to discuss any potential risks or side effects associated with emergency contraception.
