Laser surgery for small retinal tears?
I had laser surgery for a small retinal tear in my right eye on Monday.
On Wednesday, I experienced discomfort in my left eye and visited an ophthalmologist.
During the procedures for both eyes, I underwent machine-assisted eye washing and maintained a distance from the machine while applying warm compresses.
After about half a day, I noticed a new dark shadow in my right eye that wasn't present before the surgery.
Is this considered abnormal? Thank you!

Hello: If you experience shadows after retinal laser treatment, it may be due to the area treated by the laser.
The laser generates heat and light energy, which can cause thermal damage to the retinal tissue, leading to the appearance of dark spots or shadows in your visual field.
This is a normal phenomenon.
However, it is important to note that shadows can also be a symptom of other retinal issues, such as retinal detachment or bleeding.
If the shadows are accompanied by blurred vision, flashes of light, or eye pain, please seek medical attention immediately for an examination.

After undergoing laser surgery for a retinal tear, it is not uncommon to experience various visual disturbances, including the appearance of black spots or shadows in your vision. These symptoms can be concerning, especially if they are new and were not present before the surgery. However, it is essential to understand that some degree of visual change can be a normal part of the healing process following retinal laser surgery.
When laser treatment is applied to the retina, it creates a controlled burn that helps to seal retinal tears or detachments. This process can lead to temporary changes in the way light is processed by the retina, resulting in visual phenomena such as black spots, flashes of light, or even a sensation of seeing floaters. These symptoms may arise due to several factors:
1. Healing Process: After laser surgery, the retina undergoes a healing process, which can involve inflammation and changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye. This can lead to the perception of black spots or shadows as the retina adjusts to the changes.
2. Vitreous Detachment: The vitreous gel can pull away from the retina during or after surgery, which may cause visual disturbances. This is known as posterior vitreous detachment and can lead to the sensation of seeing floaters or shadows.
3. Laser Effects: The laser itself can cause temporary changes in the retinal tissue. The treated area may appear different as it heals, and this can manifest as dark spots in your field of vision.
4. Inflammation: Post-surgical inflammation can also contribute to visual disturbances. The eye may react to the surgery with swelling, which can affect vision temporarily.
It is crucial to monitor these symptoms closely. If the black spots persist, increase in size, or are accompanied by other symptoms such as flashes of light, significant vision loss, or pain, it is essential to seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of complications such as retinal detachment or bleeding, which require prompt evaluation and treatment.
In your case, since you mentioned that the black spot appeared after the surgery and was not present before, it is advisable to follow up with your ophthalmologist. They can perform a thorough examination to assess the health of your retina and determine whether the changes you are experiencing are part of the normal healing process or if they indicate a more serious issue.
In summary, while experiencing black spots after retinal laser surgery can be a normal occurrence, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult your eye care professional if you have any concerns. Regular follow-up appointments are crucial for monitoring your recovery and ensuring that any potential complications are addressed promptly. Your eye health is paramount, especially after a procedure involving the delicate structures of the retina.
