Post-operative complications of retinal laser surgery?
Recently, I have experienced an increase in symptoms of floaters, so I underwent a retinal examination.
It was found that there is a small black spot at the edge of the retina, and the doctor mentioned that it is related to the vitreous body.
He recommended laser treatment to prevent it from developing into a retinal tear or even retinal detachment.
However, after the laser procedure, I have noticed that when looking at certain angles, I can distinctly feel something at the site of the laser treatment.
It is hard to describe whether it is an afterimage or a shadow, but it feels like a mark.
Upon closer inspection or after some time, this mark disappears, and then the cycle repeats.
Although it does not affect my vision or the ability to see, it feels uncomfortable and strange.
It has been about two days since the laser treatment.
Is this a normal phenomenon after the surgery?

Hello Jack: Most of the black spots are referred to as floaters.
If you have undergone laser treatment, you can feel more at ease and just continue to monitor the situation.
The ophthalmology department at Puzi Hospital in Taiwan is open Monday to Friday from 8:00 AM to 12:00 PM and Wednesday afternoons from 1:00 PM to 4:30 PM.
We hope to have the opportunity to serve you.
Best regards, Gao Pilin.

More Info
After undergoing retinal laser treatment, it is not uncommon to experience various symptoms and sensations as part of the healing process. The presence of a small black dot or shadow, particularly in the area where the laser was applied, can be a typical post-operative phenomenon. This sensation may feel like a remnant or trace of the procedure, often described as a shadow or afterimage that appears under certain lighting conditions or angles of vision.
Understanding Post-Laser Symptoms
1. Healing Process: After laser treatment, the retina undergoes a healing process. The laser creates tiny burns in the retina to help seal any tears or holes, which can lead to temporary changes in vision. The sensation of seeing a shadow or afterimage can be attributed to the healing of the retinal tissue and the way the brain processes visual information from the affected area.
2. Visual Disturbances: It is not unusual for patients to report visual disturbances, such as floaters or flashes of light, especially after retinal procedures. These disturbances may be more pronounced when looking in certain directions or under specific lighting conditions. The brain may take time to adjust to the changes in the retina, leading to sensations that can feel strange or disconcerting.
3. Duration of Symptoms: Typically, these symptoms should gradually diminish over time. In the first few days post-surgery, it is common for patients to notice these sensations more acutely. As the retina heals, the brain will likely adapt, and the symptoms should lessen. However, if these sensations persist or worsen, it is essential to follow up with your ophthalmologist.
4. When to Seek Help: While some degree of discomfort or unusual visual sensations can be expected, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms. If you experience significant changes in vision, increased floaters, flashes of light, or any new symptoms that cause concern, you should contact your eye care provider immediately. These could be signs of complications, such as retinal detachment or other issues requiring prompt attention.
Additional Considerations
- Post-Operative Care: Following your doctor's post-operative care instructions is vital. This may include using prescribed eye drops, avoiding strenuous activities, and attending follow-up appointments to monitor your recovery.
- Managing Expectations: Understanding that the healing process can take time is essential. Each patient's experience is unique, and while some may recover quickly, others may take longer to feel completely normal.
- Emotional Impact: The psychological aspect of experiencing unusual visual sensations can be distressing. It is essential to communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider, who can offer reassurance and guidance.
In conclusion, while the sensations you are experiencing after your retinal laser treatment may feel unusual, they are often part of the normal healing process. However, maintaining open communication with your eye care provider and attending follow-up appointments will ensure that any potential complications are addressed promptly. If you have ongoing concerns or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to reach out for further evaluation.
