Post-Laser Treatment Symptoms: What to Expect After Retinal Repair - Ophthalmology

After retinal laser repair

Last week, I visited an ophthalmologist due to floaters, and the doctor informed me that my retina is too thin, which could potentially lead to a tear.
Therefore, on Tuesday (three days ago), I underwent laser treatment for both eyes.
However, the night after the laser procedure, I experienced a sudden, intense flash of light in my right eye while sleeping, which startled me awake.
After that incident, I did not experience any similar phenomena in my right eye until the third night.
On that night, while sleeping, I noticed that my left eye exhibited a condition where, when I closed my eyes in a dark environment (almost completely dark), I felt a light source shining from above my eye (it was a continuous glow, not flickering).
I'm not sure if my right eye is experiencing the same issue because the light phenomenon in my left eye is quite pronounced.
I would like to ask the doctor if this is considered normal.
I have also seen online that flashes can occur after retinal laser treatment, but it seems different from my experience.
Additionally, my follow-up appointment at the original hospital is scheduled for next Thursday, and I am a bit concerned that there might be other underlying conditions.
(For clarification: aside from the unusual sensations when closing my eyes, I have not felt any abnormalities in my vision other than the floaters.) Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Wang Zhangji reply Ophthalmology

Occasional flashes of light and seeing light only when closing the eyes are typically not common symptoms of retinal detachment.
After laser treatment, it is important to minimize activity and attend follow-up appointments to monitor the condition of the retina.
If symptoms worsen, it is advisable to seek an earlier examination.

More Info

After undergoing retinal laser treatment, it is not uncommon for patients to experience a range of symptoms, including visual disturbances such as flashes of light or the perception of light in dark environments. These phenomena can be concerning, especially for someone who has just had a procedure aimed at addressing issues like retinal thinning or holes.

Understanding Post-Laser Treatment Symptoms
1. Flashes of Light: The experience of seeing flashes of light, particularly after laser treatment, can be attributed to several factors. The retina is a sensitive tissue, and any manipulation during the procedure can lead to temporary irritation. This irritation can manifest as visual disturbances, including flashes. It is important to note that these flashes are often transient and may resolve as the eye heals.

2. Light Perception in Darkness: The sensation of light when your eyes are closed in a dark environment, known as phosphenes, can also occur after retinal laser surgery. This can be due to the stimulation of the retina or the optic nerve, which can happen as the eye adjusts post-surgery. While this can be alarming, it is often a normal response to the recent changes in the eye.

3. Duration and Monitoring: The symptoms you described, particularly the flashes and light perception, may diminish over time as your eyes heal. However, it is crucial to monitor these symptoms. If they persist or worsen, it is essential to communicate this to your eye care provider. Since your follow-up appointment is scheduled for next week, keep a close eye on any changes in your vision and report them during your visit.

When to Seek Immediate Attention
While some post-operative symptoms are normal, certain signs warrant immediate medical attention:
- Increased Frequency or Intensity of Flashes: If you notice that the flashes become more frequent or intense, it could indicate a potential complication.

- New Floaters or Changes in Vision: An increase in floaters or any sudden changes in your vision should be evaluated promptly.

- Pain or Discomfort: If you experience significant pain or discomfort, it is important to seek medical advice.

Conclusion
In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing after your retinal laser treatment, such as flashes of light and light perception in darkness, can be part of the normal healing process. However, it is vital to remain vigilant and report any concerning changes to your eye care provider. Healing can take time, and while many patients experience a return to normal vision, each case is unique. Your eye doctor will be able to provide the best guidance based on your specific situation and any findings during your follow-up appointment. Remember, your vision is precious, and proactive communication with your healthcare provider is key to ensuring the best possible outcome.
