Retinal tear laser treatment
Hello, Doctor! I have myopia of about 700 degrees.
About a week ago, I had an examination of my retina and discovered a small hole in my right eye.
Consequently, I underwent laser repair that evening.
After the laser procedure, I experienced some residual glare at the treated area, but I didn't pay much attention to it and went to bed shortly after.
The next day, I woke up to find that the glare was still present, and the treated area felt like there was a dark fog obstructing my vision, along with a sensation similar to rippling water, which I could also feel with my eyes closed.
As of today (7 days post-surgery), the dark fog and rippling sensation persist.
I would like to inquire about what might be causing these symptoms.
I have a follow-up appointment scheduled in 5 days; do you think it is necessary to have another examination before then? Thank you, Doctor!

More Info
After undergoing laser treatment for a retinal hole, it is not uncommon to experience a variety of visual disturbances and discomfort. Your symptoms, including the persistent afterimages (or "ghosting"), black spots, and the sensation of water waves, can be concerning but may be part of the normal healing process following such a procedure.
Understanding Post-Laser Symptoms
1. Afterimages and Ghosting: The laser treatment can cause temporary changes in the retina, leading to visual phenomena such as afterimages or ghosting. This occurs because the laser alters the retinal tissue, which can affect how light is processed. These symptoms may gradually improve as the retina heals.
2. Black Spots and Shadows: The sensation of a black spot or shadow in your vision can be attributed to several factors. It could be related to the healing process of the retina or the presence of floaters, which are common after any retinal procedure. Floaters are tiny clumps of gel or cells that float in the vitreous humor of the eye and can cast shadows on the retina, leading to the perception of spots or shadows.
3. Water Wave Sensation: The feeling of water waves or distortions in your vision can be a result of changes in the vitreous gel that fills the eye. After laser treatment, the vitreous may shift or pull away from the retina, which can create these sensations. This is often temporary, but it is essential to monitor these symptoms.
When to Seek Further Evaluation
While it is good that you have a follow-up appointment scheduled, if your symptoms worsen or if you experience new symptoms such as increased pain, sudden vision loss, or flashes of light, it is advisable to seek immediate medical attention. These could be signs of complications, such as retinal detachment, which requires prompt intervention.
Recommendations for Recovery
- Follow-Up Care: Continue to attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your ophthalmologist. They will monitor your healing process and can provide reassurance or treatment if necessary.
- Avoid Strain: Limit activities that may strain your eyes, such as prolonged screen time or reading, especially if you notice discomfort. Allow your eyes to rest and recover.
- Hydration and Nutrition: Maintain a healthy diet rich in vitamins A, C, and E, as well as omega-3 fatty acids, which are beneficial for eye health. Staying hydrated is also crucial for overall eye function.
- Protect Your Eyes: Wear sunglasses when outdoors to protect your eyes from UV light, which can exacerbate symptoms.
Conclusion
In summary, the symptoms you are experiencing after laser treatment for a retinal hole are not uncommon and may be part of the healing process. However, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult your ophthalmologist if you notice any significant changes or worsening of your symptoms. Your upcoming appointment will provide an opportunity for a thorough evaluation and reassurance regarding your recovery.
