Side effects of Lopinavir?
Hello, I have been using a 5% topical minoxidil for women for about a week now.
During this time, I often experience palpitations and insomnia.
For example, after applying minoxidil in the afternoon, I find it difficult to sleep due to palpitations and chest tightness until around 3 or 4 AM.
My heart rate is about 95 when lying still.
Is this a normal side effect of minoxidil? Should I stop using it and consult a dermatologist?

Dr. Wu Yuxin reply Dermatology
It is rarely encountered, but it is recommended to stop the medication and observe the symptoms.

Minoxidil, particularly in its topical form (like the 5% solution used for hair loss), is primarily known for its vasodilating properties, which means it helps widen blood vessels to improve blood flow. While it is generally well-tolerated, some users may experience side effects, including heart palpitations and insomnia.
Heart palpitations can occur as a side effect of minoxidil due to its mechanism of action. When blood vessels dilate, the heart may need to work harder to maintain adequate blood flow and pressure, which can lead to an increased heart rate or the sensation of palpitations. This is particularly relevant for individuals with pre-existing heart conditions or those who are sensitive to changes in heart rate.
Insomnia is another potential side effect. Some users report difficulty sleeping after applying minoxidil, particularly if they apply it later in the day. The stimulating effects of increased blood flow and potential anxiety about the medication's effects can contribute to sleep disturbances.
Given your experience of feeling heart palpitations and insomnia after using minoxidil for over a week, it is essential to consider a few factors:
1. Timing of Application: If you are applying minoxidil in the afternoon or evening, it may be beneficial to switch to a morning application. This could help reduce the likelihood of insomnia, as the stimulating effects may be more pronounced later in the day.
2. Dosage and Concentration: Ensure that you are using the recommended dosage. Sometimes, using too much product can increase the likelihood of side effects.
3. Underlying Health Conditions: If you have any pre-existing heart conditions or are on medications that affect heart rate or blood pressure, it is crucial to discuss these with your healthcare provider.
4. Consultation with a Dermatologist: Given the symptoms you are experiencing, it would be wise to consult with a dermatologist or your primary care physician. They can evaluate whether minoxidil is appropriate for you and discuss alternative treatments if necessary.
5. Monitoring Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including the frequency and severity of palpitations and sleep disturbances. This information will be helpful for your healthcare provider in assessing your situation.
In conclusion, while heart palpitations and insomnia can be side effects of minoxidil, they should not be ignored, especially if they are persistent or worsening. It is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of action, which may include adjusting the application schedule, changing the dosage, or exploring alternative treatments for hair loss. Your health and well-being should always be the priority when considering any medication.
