Unusual Urine Odor During Menstruation: Causes and Concerns - Urology

Urinary issues

After this menstrual period, the first urine in the morning has a strong, somewhat sour odor.
If I wake up at 3 AM to use the bathroom, there is no odor, but by 8 AM, there is a smell again, which disappears by 10 AM.
During this time, I haven't had any water; I just go back to sleep after using the bathroom.
The last time this happened was after I ate too much meat at a hot pot dinner, but this is the first time it has occurred during my menstrual period.
The day before, my urine was normal and odorless, but once my period started, the smell changed.
This situation continued even after my period ended.
I have maintained my usual diet without any significant changes.
Currently, towards the end of urination, I feel a bit of warmth, but it is not burning.
I do not have issues with frequent urination, blood in the urine, or a feeling of incomplete emptying.
Therefore, I would like to inquire why this situation is occurring.
Could it be due to excessive stress? Thank you for your response, doctor.

Hello: A urine test is necessary for diagnosis.
As for the odor and dark color, increasing water intake can help resolve these issues.
Wishing you good health.

The unusual odor of urine during menstruation can be attributed to several factors, and it is essential to understand the underlying causes to address any concerns effectively. During menstruation, hormonal changes, dietary habits, and hydration levels can all influence the characteristics of urine, including its odor.

Firstly, hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle can lead to changes in the body's metabolism and the way certain substances are processed. For instance, the presence of menstrual blood can alter the pH of urine, making it more acidic, which may contribute to a stronger or different odor. Additionally, the breakdown of blood and tissue during menstruation can release compounds that may affect the smell of urine.

Dietary choices can also play a significant role in urine odor. Foods high in protein, such as meat, can lead to a more pungent smell due to the increased production of urea and other nitrogenous waste products. If you consumed a protein-rich meal, such as a hot pot with a lot of meat, it could explain the stronger odor you noticed the following day. However, you mentioned that this time the odor occurred during your menstrual period without any significant dietary changes, which suggests that hormonal factors might be more influential in this instance.

Hydration is another critical factor. When you wake up in the morning, your body may be slightly dehydrated after several hours of sleep, leading to more concentrated urine, which can have a stronger odor. The fact that you did not drink water before your morning urination could contribute to this concentration. It is advisable to maintain adequate hydration throughout the day, especially during menstruation, to help dilute urine and minimize any strong odors.

Regarding the warmth you feel at the end of urination, this could be a normal sensation, especially if your urine is concentrated. However, if you experience any discomfort, burning sensations, or changes in urination patterns (such as increased frequency or urgency), it would be prudent to consult a healthcare professional to rule out any urinary tract infections (UTIs) or other underlying issues.

Stress can also impact your body in various ways, including hormonal balance and hydration levels. While it may not be the direct cause of the odor, high stress can lead to changes in your eating habits, hydration, and overall health, which could indirectly affect urine characteristics.

In summary, the unusual odor of urine during menstruation can result from hormonal changes, dietary influences, and hydration levels. If the odor persists or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms, such as pain, burning, or changes in urination, it is advisable to seek medical attention for further evaluation. Maintaining good hydration, monitoring your diet, and managing stress can help mitigate these changes. If you have ongoing concerns, consider discussing them with a healthcare provider who can provide personalized advice and support.
