Missed menstruation?
Hello, doctor! A few days ago, I visited a gynecologist because my period was delayed, and it was found that I have a corpus luteum cyst on my left ovary.
The doctor mentioned that it should resolve on its own once my period arrives, and I was prescribed a three-day course of medication to induce menstruation.
However, after finishing the medication, my period still hasn't come.
Can a corpus luteum cyst cause a delay in menstruation? On April 12, I had a fully naked intimate encounter with my boyfriend (I helped him with manual stimulation), and he ejaculated.
I was careful to avoid any contact between the semen and my vagina, but I'm still worried about the possibility of a mistake.
Is it possible that I could be pregnant because of this, or could the delay be due to stress? My recent routine has been quite regular, and I usually go to bed early, but occasionally I wake up in the middle of the night and have trouble falling back asleep.
Additionally, my menstrual cycle has been somewhat irregular lately; I had my period three times last month.
What other factors could potentially cause my period to be delayed? Thank you for your response, doctor.

Delayed menstruation can be a source of anxiety for many individuals, especially when combined with concerns about potential pregnancy and the presence of ovarian cysts. In your case, you mentioned that you have a corpus luteum cyst on your left ovary, which can indeed influence your menstrual cycle.
A corpus luteum cyst forms after an egg is released from the ovary during ovulation. It is responsible for producing hormones, particularly progesterone, which helps maintain the uterine lining for a potential pregnancy. If pregnancy does not occur, the cyst typically dissolves on its own, and menstruation resumes. However, if the cyst is larger or if there are hormonal imbalances, it can lead to delayed menstruation. In your case, since you have been prescribed medication to induce menstruation, it is likely that your healthcare provider is monitoring the situation closely.
Regarding your concerns about pregnancy, while you mentioned that you took precautions during intimate activities, it is important to note that any exposure to sperm, even if minimal, can potentially lead to pregnancy. However, the likelihood of pregnancy from the scenario you described (manual stimulation without direct contact) is relatively low, especially if precautions were taken. That said, if your period continues to be delayed, it may be wise to take a home pregnancy test or consult with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.
Stress is another significant factor that can affect your menstrual cycle. High levels of stress can disrupt the hypothalamus, which regulates hormones that control the menstrual cycle. This disruption can lead to irregular periods or missed cycles. Given that you mentioned experiencing insomnia and waking up suddenly at night, it seems that stress may be playing a role in your situation. It is essential to find effective stress management techniques, such as mindfulness, relaxation exercises, or engaging in activities that you enjoy, to help alleviate some of this pressure.
Additionally, other factors that could contribute to delayed menstruation include significant weight changes, excessive exercise, hormonal imbalances, or underlying health conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Since you mentioned that your menstrual cycle has been irregular, with three periods last month, it may be beneficial to keep a detailed record of your menstrual cycle, stress levels, and any other symptoms you experience. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider in determining the underlying cause of your delayed menstruation.
In conclusion, while a corpus luteum cyst can contribute to delayed menstruation, stress and other factors may also play a significant role. If your period does not resume soon, or if you continue to experience anxiety about potential pregnancy, I recommend following up with your healthcare provider for further evaluation and support. They may suggest additional tests or treatments to help regulate your menstrual cycle and address any underlying concerns. Remember, it is essential to prioritize your mental and emotional well-being during this time, as it can significantly impact your overall health.
