Desensitization therapy
Hello: If I am undergoing desensitization therapy abroad and have reached the later stage of receiving injections once a month, but I need to return to Taiwan for more than two months, I would like to know if hospitals in Taiwan can continue to administer the injections (with the medication I bring).
If so, what documentation should I bring? Which department should I visit? Thank you.
aster, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/12/24
Dr. Hong Shouhong reply Family Medicine
Most desensitization therapies are conducted in pediatric allergy and immunology departments.
If you plan to return to Taiwan for continued treatment, it is advisable to prepare your past medical records and immunization history, as well as a referral from your physician.
You can schedule an appointment with either a pediatrician or a family medicine specialist.

More Info
Continuing allergy immunotherapy while transitioning from one country to another can be a complex process, but it is certainly feasible in Taiwan. Here’s what you need to know about continuing your treatment and the necessary steps to take.
Understanding Allergy Immunotherapy
Allergy immunotherapy, commonly known as allergy shots or desensitization therapy, is a long-term treatment that helps reduce allergic reactions. It involves the administration of gradually increasing doses of allergens to build up the body’s tolerance. This therapy can be particularly beneficial for individuals with allergic rhinitis, asthma, or insect sting allergies.
Continuing Treatment in Taiwan
1. Consultation with an Allergist: The first step is to consult with an allergist or immunologist in Taiwan. Major medical centers such as National Taiwan University Hospital, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital, and Taipei Medical University Hospital have specialized departments for allergy and immunology. You can schedule an appointment with the Allergy and Immunology department.
2. Documentation Required: When you visit the allergist, it is crucial to bring the following documents:
- Medical Records: This should include your treatment history, the specific allergens you are being treated for, and the dosage schedule you have been following.
- Immunotherapy Prescription: A copy of your current prescription or treatment plan from your previous healthcare provider will be helpful.
- Allergy Test Results: If you have recent allergy test results, bring those along as well.
3. Medication: Since you mentioned that you would be bringing your own medication, ensure that the vials are properly labeled and stored according to the required conditions (usually refrigeration). It’s advisable to check with the allergist in Taiwan if they accept the specific formulation you are bringing.
4. Insurance and Payment: Check with your health insurance provider regarding coverage for allergy immunotherapy in Taiwan. Some insurance plans may cover the treatment, while others may not. Be prepared to discuss payment options with the hospital.
What to Expect
Once you have your appointment, the allergist will review your medical history and the documents you provided. They may conduct a physical examination and possibly repeat allergy tests to confirm your current sensitivities. Based on this assessment, they will determine if you can continue with your current immunotherapy regimen or if any adjustments are needed.
Frequency of Treatment
Since you are in the maintenance phase of your immunotherapy (receiving shots once a month), the allergist will likely continue this schedule, provided that your treatment is stable and effective. It’s important to communicate any side effects or concerns you have experienced during your treatment.
Conclusion
Continuing your allergy immunotherapy in Taiwan is possible with the right preparation and communication with local healthcare providers. By bringing the necessary documentation and consulting with a qualified allergist, you can ensure a smooth transition in your treatment. If you have any further questions or concerns, don’t hesitate to reach out to the medical staff at the hospital you choose to visit. They will be able to guide you through the process and provide the care you need.
