Ingestion of alcohol gel?
On the evening of May 12th, while eating hot pot, I discovered a small transparent gel-like substance on the cabbage, about the size of a grain of rice.
It seems that the staff might have accidentally gotten some lighter fluid on it while igniting the fire, and when they extinguished the flame, it was flicked onto the food.
I had already eaten a bit of it and am unsure if I ingested any.
I would like to ask: 1.
Is there a problem if I accidentally ingested a small amount of alcohol gel? 2.
If there is poisoning, when would the symptoms appear at the latest? 3.
I am currently taking ciprofloxacin 500mg, pisantol 5mg, polaramine 2mg, bensau 100mg, mucosolvon 30mg, zyrtec 10mg, and medicon-a 30mg.
Will these medications interact with the alcohol gel? I read online that alcohol gels are often industrial alcohols containing methanol, which can cause poisoning, blindness, and have a high mortality rate.
I am very scared right now.

Hello, most commercially available alcohol gels contain methanol and thickening agents.
Methanol is indeed a toxic alcohol, and "excessive" intake can lead to acute methanol poisoning, which may occur within 6 to 12 hours or may be delayed until the next day.
If you have any concerns, it is advisable to seek medical evaluation.

Accidental ingestion of alcohol gel, particularly in small amounts, can raise concerns about potential toxicity and adverse effects. Here’s a detailed response to your questions based on medical knowledge and understanding of the situation.
1. Risks of Ingesting Alcohol Gel: Alcohol gels, commonly used as hand sanitizers, typically contain ethanol or isopropyl alcohol as their active ingredient. If you ingested a small amount (about the size of a grain of rice), the immediate risk is relatively low, especially if it was ethanol-based. However, if the gel contained methanol (wood alcohol), the risks increase significantly, as methanol is highly toxic and can lead to severe health issues, including blindness and death. Symptoms of methanol poisoning can include headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting, and visual disturbances, which may occur within a few hours to a day after ingestion.
2. Onset of Symptoms: If you ingested ethanol, symptoms may be mild and could include gastrointestinal discomfort or mild intoxication, which typically resolves without intervention. However, if you ingested methanol, symptoms can appear within 30 minutes to 12 hours after ingestion. It’s crucial to monitor for any signs of toxicity, such as confusion, difficulty breathing, or visual changes. If you experience any concerning symptoms, seek medical attention immediately.
3. Drug Interactions: Regarding the medications you are currently taking—ciprofloxacin, pisantong, polaramine, bensau, mucosolvon, zyrtec, and medicon-a—there are potential interactions to consider. Ethanol can interact with certain medications, particularly those that affect the central nervous system (CNS), such as polaramine (an antihistamine) and benzodiazepines (like bensau). These interactions can enhance sedative effects, leading to increased drowsiness or dizziness. Ciprofloxacin, an antibiotic, does not have a significant interaction with ethanol, but alcohol can impair the immune response, potentially affecting recovery from infections.
Given your concerns about the potential for methanol poisoning, it is essential to clarify the composition of the alcohol gel you ingested. If it is confirmed to be ethanol-based and you consumed only a small amount, the risk of severe toxicity is low. However, if there is any uncertainty about the type of alcohol or the amount ingested, or if you start experiencing any symptoms, it is advisable to contact a healthcare professional or poison control center for guidance.
In summary, while the accidental ingestion of a small amount of alcohol gel may not pose a significant risk, it is essential to remain vigilant for any symptoms of toxicity, particularly if methanol is involved. Always consult with a healthcare provider if you have concerns about potential poisoning or interactions with your current medications.
