Hearing an echo when tapping on the head?

Hello Dr.
Hsu: I have a history of dizziness from 8 years ago and stopped medication after 4 months.
I started taking ginkgo biloba for health maintenance six months ago, but two weeks ago I experienced a sensation of echo when lightly tapping my head.
I visited the outpatient clinic, and the doctor said my dizziness has recurred.
I have two questions for you: (1) What could be the reasons for the recurrence of dizziness? (2) Can ginkgo biloba be used as a dietary supplement? (When I mentioned to the doctor that I was taking ginkgo biloba, he immediately advised against it, which left me a bit confused.
I would appreciate your clarification.) Thank you, and I wish you good health.

Dizziness can be a perplexing symptom, and understanding its recurrence is essential for effective management. In your case, you have a history of dizziness that has resurfaced after several years, which raises important questions about its underlying causes and the role of supplements like Ginkgo Biloba.

1. Causes of Recurring Dizziness
Dizziness can stem from a variety of causes, and its recurrence may be linked to several factors:
- Vestibular Disorders: Conditions affecting the inner ear, such as Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis, or Meniere's disease, can lead to episodes of dizziness. These conditions can be episodic and may recur after a period of stability.

- Neurological Issues: Migraines can sometimes present with dizziness, known as vestibular migraines. Other neurological conditions may also cause dizziness, and these should be evaluated by a healthcare professional.

- Cardiovascular Factors: Changes in blood pressure, dehydration, or heart-related issues can lead to dizziness. If you have experienced any changes in your overall health or lifestyle, these could contribute to the recurrence.

- Medication Side Effects: If you were on medication for your dizziness previously, consider whether any new medications or changes in dosage could be influencing your symptoms.

- Stress and Anxiety: Psychological factors can also manifest physically, leading to episodes of dizziness. Stress management techniques may be beneficial in these cases.

2. Ginkgo Biloba as a Supplement
Ginkgo Biloba is often marketed as a natural remedy for improving cognitive function and circulation, and it has been used by some individuals to manage symptoms of dizziness. However, there are important considerations:
- Efficacy: The scientific evidence supporting the use of Ginkgo Biloba for dizziness is mixed. Some studies suggest it may help with certain types of dizziness, while others show little to no benefit.

- Safety and Interactions: Ginkgo Biloba can interact with other medications, particularly anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs, increasing the risk of bleeding. This is likely why your doctor advised against its use. If you are taking any other medications or have underlying health conditions, it is crucial to discuss the use of Ginkgo Biloba with your healthcare provider.

- Underlying Conditions: If your dizziness is due to a specific medical condition, treating that condition is more important than relying on supplements. Ginkgo Biloba should not replace conventional treatments prescribed by your doctor.

Conclusion
In summary, the recurrence of your dizziness could be attributed to various factors, including vestibular disorders, neurological issues, cardiovascular factors, medication side effects, or psychological stress. It is essential to have a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment.

Regarding Ginkgo Biloba, while it is popular as a health supplement, its efficacy for dizziness is not well-established, and it may pose risks, especially if you are on other medications. Always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any new supplement, particularly if you have a history of dizziness or other health concerns. Your health and safety should always come first, and a tailored approach to your symptoms will yield the best outcomes.
