More Info
Entresto (sacubitril/valsartan) is a medication commonly prescribed for heart failure, particularly in patients with reduced ejection fraction. It works by enhancing the body's natural vasodilatory peptides, which help to relax blood vessels, reduce blood pressure, and ultimately improve heart function. While Entresto is effective in managing heart failure symptoms, it can also have side effects, including fatigue and drowsiness.
Feeling sleepy after taking Entresto can be a common experience for some patients. This drowsiness may be attributed to several factors:
1. Blood Pressure Lowering: Entresto can lower blood pressure, which may lead to feelings of fatigue or sleepiness, especially if your body is still adjusting to the medication. If your blood pressure drops significantly, it can cause lightheadedness or fatigue, prompting a desire to rest or sleep.
2. Heart Function Improvement: As your heart begins to function more efficiently due to the medication, your body may require more rest to recover from previous strain. This can lead to increased sleepiness as your body works to heal and adapt.
3. Other Medications: If you are taking other medications alongside Entresto, it’s important to consider their potential interactions. Some medications can enhance the sedative effects of Entresto, leading to increased drowsiness.
4. Underlying Conditions: Given your history of mitral valve regurgitation, it’s possible that your heart condition itself may contribute to feelings of fatigue. Heart failure can lead to decreased oxygen delivery to tissues, which can cause tiredness and a need for more sleep.
5. Lifestyle Factors: Factors such as diet, hydration, and overall health can also influence how you feel after taking medication. If you are experiencing gastrointestinal discomfort or other symptoms, this could further contribute to feelings of fatigue.
If you find that the sleepiness is excessive or interferes with your daily activities, it is essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They may want to evaluate your overall treatment plan, including the dosage of Entresto, and consider whether any adjustments are necessary. Additionally, they might check for other potential causes of fatigue, such as anemia, thyroid dysfunction, or sleep disorders.
In summary, while feeling sleepy after taking Entresto can be a normal side effect, it is crucial to monitor how you feel and communicate any concerns with your healthcare provider. They can help determine whether this side effect is manageable or if further evaluation and adjustments to your treatment plan are needed. Always prioritize your health and well-being, and do not hesitate to seek professional advice when experiencing new or concerning symptoms.
