Are you pregnant?

Hello doctor, my menstrual cycle is approximately between 28 to 34 days.
My last period was on April 6, and I had protected intercourse on April 23.
I took a pregnancy test on May 11, which was negative (not using first morning urine).
On May 15, I visited a gynecologist who performed a pregnancy test (not using first morning urine) and an ultrasound.
The doctor said I was not pregnant and that my endometrial lining was thin.
I would like to know if I still need to take a pregnancy test.
The doctor prescribed me medication to induce menstruation, but I haven't gotten my period yet.
Since May 6, I have been experiencing breast engorgement up until today.
Is there still a chance of pregnancy?

Dr. Cao Guotao reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, you are likely not pregnant.
Your period should come within a week after finishing the menstrual induction medication.
Just wait a bit longer.
Wishing you good health.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding your pregnancy concerns. Based on the details you've provided, it seems you are experiencing a complex situation that involves your menstrual cycle, potential pregnancy, and some physical symptoms. Let's break this down step by step.

Firstly, your menstrual cycle, which varies between 28 to 34 days, is within the normal range. You mentioned that your last menstrual period started on April 6, and you had protected intercourse on April 23. You took a pregnancy test on May 11, which was negative, and subsequently visited a gynecologist on May 15, who also confirmed that you were not pregnant through a urine test and an ultrasound, noting that your endometrial lining was thin.

Given that you have had two negative pregnancy tests and a medical evaluation indicating no pregnancy, the likelihood of being pregnant is quite low. However, it's important to note that pregnancy tests can sometimes yield false negatives, especially if taken too early or if the urine is diluted. Since you mentioned that the tests were not done with first-morning urine, this could also affect the accuracy.

You also mentioned experiencing breast tenderness, which can be a symptom of hormonal changes rather than a definitive sign of pregnancy. Breast tenderness can occur due to various reasons, including premenstrual syndrome (PMS), hormonal fluctuations, or even stress.
Regarding the medication prescribed to induce menstruation, it is common for doctors to prescribe such medications when there is a concern about a missed period or irregular cycles. If you have taken the medication and your period has not started, it may be advisable to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to conduct further evaluations to understand why your menstrual cycle has not resumed, especially since you are experiencing symptoms like breast tenderness.

In terms of whether you should take another pregnancy test, it may be beneficial to wait a few days to see if your period starts after taking the medication. If your period does not arrive within a week or if you continue to experience symptoms that concern you, it would be wise to consult your doctor again. They may recommend further testing or evaluations, such as blood tests to measure hormone levels, which can provide more definitive answers regarding your pregnancy status.

In summary, while the chances of pregnancy appear low based on your recent tests and evaluations, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and follow up with your healthcare provider if you have ongoing concerns. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, and your doctor can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation.
