Weight Issues Related to Gastritis

I am 175 cm tall and my weight has dropped from 76 kg to 70 kg over the past month.
I have been experiencing pain in my upper left abdomen.
Previously, I underwent an endoscopy and was diagnosed with acute and chronic gastritis, Helicobacter pylori infection, and a hiatal hernia.
Could these symptoms be causing my weight loss? Do I need to undergo any additional tests?

Hello, if gastritis has led to a decreased appetite, it can certainly result in weight loss.
Additionally, it is important to monitor the condition of nearby organs, such as the gallbladder and colon.
If there is no improvement, it is advisable to consult a gastroenterologist.

Gastritis and other digestive issues can indeed lead to weight loss, and your symptoms suggest that this may be the case for you. When the stomach lining becomes inflamed, as seen in gastritis, it can result in various gastrointestinal symptoms such as pain, bloating, nausea, and changes in appetite. These symptoms can significantly affect your ability to eat normally, leading to reduced caloric intake and subsequent weight loss.

In your case, the combination of acute and chronic gastritis, along with the presence of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) and a hiatal hernia, can exacerbate these issues. H. pylori infection is known to cause inflammation of the stomach lining, which can lead to discomfort and a decreased desire to eat. The hiatal hernia can also contribute to symptoms such as acid reflux, which may further discourage eating due to the discomfort it causes.

Weight loss can occur for several reasons in individuals with gastritis and related conditions:
1. Reduced Appetite: Pain and discomfort after eating can lead to a natural reduction in food intake. If eating causes pain, individuals may avoid meals altogether or eat significantly less than they normally would.

2. Malabsorption: In some cases, gastritis can affect the stomach's ability to properly digest and absorb nutrients, leading to weight loss despite normal or increased food intake.

3. Increased Metabolic Demand: Chronic inflammation can increase the body's metabolic rate, leading to weight loss even if caloric intake remains the same.

4. Psychological Factors: Anxiety and stress related to ongoing digestive issues can also impact appetite and eating habits, contributing to weight loss.

Given your symptoms and the recent weight loss from 76 kg to 70 kg, it is essential to address these issues with your healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluations, such as:
- Endoscopy: If not done recently, a repeat endoscopy may be warranted to assess the current state of your gastritis and check for any complications.

- H. pylori Testing: If you haven't been treated for H. pylori, or if you have been treated but still have symptoms, retesting may be necessary to ensure the infection has been eradicated.

- Nutritional Assessment: A dietitian can help evaluate your dietary intake and suggest ways to increase caloric consumption in a way that is gentle on your stomach.

- Imaging Studies: If your symptoms persist, imaging studies such as an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan may help rule out other potential causes of your symptoms.

- Blood Tests: These can help assess for nutritional deficiencies, anemia, or other underlying conditions that may be contributing to your weight loss.

In summary, your symptoms of gastritis, along with the presence of H. pylori and a hiatal hernia, can certainly contribute to weight loss. It is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms, potential treatments, and any additional tests that may be necessary to ensure a comprehensive approach to your health. Addressing these issues promptly can help prevent further weight loss and improve your overall well-being.
