Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
Hello doctor, I originally had mild gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and was not taking any medication, experiencing symptoms about once every week or two.
Recently, the frequency has increased to once a day over the past month, and I have lost about 4 kilograms in weight (originally 86 kg).
My stools are loose and mostly brown in color, with some undigested vegetable remnants.
I would like to know if the weight loss is related to the gastroesophageal reflux or if there is an issue with my digestive system.
My eating habits have not changed significantly.

Dr. Ye Qianyu reply Family Medicine
Hello! Based on your description, it seems that the issue is not solely related to gastroesophageal reflux.
I recommend that you visit a hepatobiliary and gastroenterology specialist for a comprehensive evaluation.
Thank you for your inquiry, and I wish you a speedy recovery!

More Info
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a chronic condition where stomach acid flows back into the esophagus, leading to symptoms such as heartburn, regurgitation, and discomfort. The connection between GERD and weight loss can be multifaceted, and understanding this relationship is crucial for managing your health.
Firstly, it’s important to note that while GERD itself does not directly cause weight loss, the symptoms associated with it can lead to changes in eating habits and overall nutrition. For instance, if you are experiencing frequent heartburn or discomfort after eating, you may subconsciously start to avoid certain foods or reduce your overall food intake to prevent these unpleasant symptoms. This can result in unintentional weight loss over time.
In your case, you mentioned that your GERD symptoms have increased in frequency, occurring once a day compared to your previous mild symptoms. This escalation could indicate that your condition is worsening, which might lead you to alter your diet or eating patterns. Additionally, the presence of loose stools and undigested food remnants in your stool could suggest that your digestive system is not processing food effectively, which can also contribute to weight loss.
Another factor to consider is the potential for esophageal inflammation or damage due to chronic acid exposure. This can lead to esophagitis, which may cause pain or discomfort when swallowing, further discouraging adequate food intake. If eating becomes painful or uncomfortable, it is natural to eat less, which could explain the weight loss you are experiencing.
Moreover, the loose stools you described could indicate a possible gastrointestinal issue that may be separate from GERD. Conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), infections, or malabsorption syndromes can lead to changes in stool consistency and weight loss. If your digestive system is not absorbing nutrients properly, this could also contribute to weight loss, regardless of your caloric intake.
It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If your weight loss continues or if you experience additional symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, persistent diarrhea, or blood in your stool, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly. A healthcare provider may recommend diagnostic tests, such as blood tests, stool tests, or imaging studies, to evaluate your digestive health and rule out any underlying conditions.
In summary, while GERD may not directly cause weight loss, the symptoms associated with it can lead to changes in eating habits and digestive function that may contribute to weight loss. Given your recent changes in symptoms and weight, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can provide a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management strategies. They may suggest dietary modifications, medications to manage GERD symptoms, or further investigations to address any potential gastrointestinal issues. Taking proactive steps now can help prevent further complications and support your overall health.
