Flickering Lights: Eye Symptoms and Possible Causes - Ophthalmology

The eyes are experiencing slight flashes of light?

Hello, Doctor.
I am nearsighted with approximately 600 degrees.
I occasionally see a few floaters, and recently I experienced some twitching in my left lower eyelid.
After using a warm compress eye mask, it improved a bit.
Recently, while watching TV at home, I sometimes feel like the lights are flickering.
The flickering sensation is somewhat similar to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2X2zIGK-BE.
However, in the same spot while watching TV, there are times when I don't notice it.
Additionally, I don't feel the lights flickering in my office, but I do notice it in the company restroom.
I would like to ask what this could possibly indicate, or should I observe it for a few more days? This situation has been occurring for about two days.
Thank you very much for your time.

Hello: The possible reasons are as follows: 1.
Floaters: Floaters are a common eye symptom characterized by seeing small black dots or thread-like objects drifting in your field of vision.
This is usually caused by conditions in the vitreous humor of the eye rather than an issue with external light sources.
The sensation of flickering in this case may be your perception of the floaters.
2.
Environmental lighting: Different lighting conditions in your environment may affect your perception.
Certain lighting methods (such as light sources behind a television) or the frequency of ambient light may cause you to perceive flickering from light bulbs.
This could be due to your eyes being more sensitive to specific frequencies of light, while not experiencing flickering in other environments.
For your situation, I recommend observing for a few more days to determine if these symptoms persist and to note their patterns.
If the problem continues or worsens, or if you have any other concerns about your eye health, it is advisable to consult an ophthalmologist.

Hello! Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding the flickering lights and other eye symptoms you are experiencing. Based on your description, it seems that you are dealing with a combination of visual disturbances, including the sensation of flickering lights, which can be quite distressing.

Possible Causes of Flickering Lights
1. Visual Fatigue: Given that you are nearsighted (myopic) with a prescription of around 600 degrees, your eyes may be experiencing fatigue, especially if you spend long hours in front of screens or under artificial lighting. This fatigue can lead to temporary visual disturbances, including the perception of flickering lights.

2. Lighting Conditions: The flickering sensation you describe could be related to the type of lighting in your environment. Some fluorescent lights, for example, can flicker at a frequency that is not always perceptible to the naked eye but can cause discomfort or visual disturbances for some individuals. The inconsistency in your experience—where you notice flickering in certain locations but not others—could be attributed to the quality of the lighting in those areas.

3. Eye Strain and Dryness: Prolonged screen time can lead to eye strain and dryness, which may exacerbate your symptoms. Using a warm compress, as you have done with the eye mask, can help alleviate some of the discomfort associated with eye strain.

4. Retinal Issues: While less likely given your recent eye examinations, it is important to consider that certain retinal conditions can cause visual disturbances, including flashes or flickers of light. If you experience any additional symptoms such as sudden changes in vision, a significant increase in floaters, or a shadow in your peripheral vision, it would be prudent to seek immediate medical attention.

5. Neurological Factors: Sometimes, visual disturbances can be linked to neurological issues, such as migraines or other conditions affecting the visual pathways in the brain. If you have a history of migraines, even if they are infrequent, this could be a contributing factor.

Recommendations
- Monitor Symptoms: Since this flickering sensation has only been occurring for a couple of days, it may be beneficial to monitor your symptoms for a little longer. Keep track of when the flickering occurs, the lighting conditions, and any other activities you were engaged in at the time.

- Adjust Lighting: If possible, try to adjust the lighting in your home and workplace. Experiment with different types of bulbs (LEDs, incandescent) to see if that alleviates the flickering sensation.

- Eye Care: Ensure you are taking regular breaks from screens (the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds) to reduce eye strain. Consider using artificial tears if you experience dryness.

- Follow-Up with an Eye Care Professional: Since you have a history of myopia and are experiencing new visual symptoms, it would be wise to schedule a follow-up appointment with your eye care provider. They can conduct a thorough examination to rule out any underlying issues and provide tailored advice based on your specific situation.

In conclusion, while the flickering lights you are experiencing may be benign and related to environmental factors or eye strain, it is essential to remain vigilant and consult with a healthcare professional if your symptoms persist or worsen. Your eye health is important, and addressing any concerns early can help prevent potential complications. Thank you for sharing your concerns, and I hope this information helps you find some relief!
