After dilation examination

A few days ago, I noticed that when looking at tiled patterns or straight lines, they appeared wavy (the wavy sensation is present in one eye).
I went to the hospital, and the doctor performed a dilated eye exam.
He said that my retina and macula have shown almost no changes compared to two months ago, and my vision is stable as well.
However, there is mild cataract formation, which he mentioned is a common age-related condition around the age of 40.
He advised me to have regular follow-up examinations.
Despite still experiencing the wavy sensation when looking at straight lines, he reassured me that I shouldn't worry too much and can continue with my normal activities.
Is this correct, or should I seek further examinations at the hospital? I found information online stating that seeing wavy lines in grid patterns indicates a problem!

Hello: Based on the information you provided, there are no significant changes in your retina and macula, and the doctor has advised you not to worry too much.
You can follow the doctor's recommendation and return for regular check-ups.
However, if you feel concerned or confused about your symptoms, I suggest seeking a second opinion from another ophthalmologist to confirm your condition.
Additionally, there is no need to worry too much about cataracts for now; regular monitoring will suffice.

More Info

It sounds like you've recently undergone a thorough eye examination, including dilation, and have been informed about your retinal health and the presence of mild cataracts. Your experience of seeing wavy lines, particularly when looking at straight edges or patterns, can indeed be concerning, but let's break down what this might mean and what steps you can take moving forward.

Understanding Your Symptoms
The perception of wavy lines or distortion in your vision, especially when looking at straight objects like tiles or lines, can be associated with several conditions. One common cause is a phenomenon known as metamorphopsia, which can occur due to issues with the retina, such as macular degeneration or other retinal conditions. However, since your doctor has indicated that your retina and macula appear stable compared to your previous examination, this is a positive sign.

The mild cataracts you mentioned are also a common age-related change, typically starting around the age of 40. While cataracts can affect vision clarity, they usually do not cause wavy lines. Instead, they may lead to blurred vision, glare, or difficulty seeing at night.

What to Do Next
1. Follow-Up Appointments: Since your doctor has recommended regular follow-ups, it’s essential to adhere to this schedule. Regular monitoring will help catch any changes in your eye health early.

2. Document Changes: Keep a journal of your symptoms. Note when the wavy vision occurs, how long it lasts, and any other visual disturbances you may experience. This information can be valuable for your eye care provider during your next visit.

3. Discuss Concerns: If the wavy lines persist or worsen, or if you experience additional symptoms such as flashes of light, increased floaters, or a sudden decrease in vision, it’s crucial to contact your eye doctor immediately. These could be signs of more serious conditions that may require prompt attention.

4. Consider Additional Testing: If your symptoms continue to cause concern, you might want to discuss the possibility of additional tests with your eye doctor. Tests such as optical coherence tomography (OCT) can provide detailed images of the retina and help identify any subtle changes that may not be visible during a standard examination.

5. Lifestyle Adjustments: While waiting for your next appointment, ensure you are taking care of your overall eye health. This includes wearing sunglasses to protect against UV light, maintaining a healthy diet rich in antioxidants (like leafy greens and fish), and managing any systemic health issues (like diabetes or hypertension) that could affect your vision.

Conclusion
In summary, while your recent eye exam results are reassuring, it’s essential to remain vigilant about any changes in your vision. The wavy lines you are experiencing could be benign, especially given the stability of your retinal health, but they warrant attention. Regular follow-ups and open communication with your eye care provider will be key in managing your eye health effectively. If you have any lingering doubts or if your symptoms change, do not hesitate to seek further evaluation. Your vision is important, and staying proactive about your eye health is the best approach.
