Right-sided rib pain?
Hello doctor, I would like to ask about a pain I experience.
When I raise my hand and turn in a circle or bend over to reach for something on my right side, I feel a sharp pain in my right rib, almost like an electric shock.
However, during normal activities, there is no issue with my ribs.
I don't feel any pain when I press on the ribs, but I am concerned.
I do smoke, so I am wondering if this is a bone issue or a lung problem.
I'm quite scared.

More Info
Right side rib pain can be concerning, especially when it occurs during specific movements like raising your arm or bending over. The sensation of pain that feels like an electric shock can be indicative of several potential issues, ranging from musculoskeletal problems to more serious conditions involving the lungs or other internal organs.
Possible Causes of Right Side Rib Pain
1. Musculoskeletal Issues: The most common cause of rib pain, especially with movement, is related to the muscles, ligaments, or bones in the rib cage. Conditions such as costochondritis (inflammation of the cartilage connecting the ribs to the sternum) or muscle strain from overuse or awkward movements can lead to localized pain. If you have been engaging in activities that require repetitive arm movements or heavy lifting, this could be a contributing factor.
2. Nerve Irritation: The sensation of pain that feels like an electric shock could also be due to nerve irritation. Conditions such as intercostal neuralgia, where the nerves between the ribs become inflamed or compressed, can cause sharp, shooting pain that may worsen with certain movements.
3. Pulmonary Issues: While less common, lung-related issues such as pleuritis (inflammation of the lining of the lungs) or a pulmonary embolism can cause pain in the rib area. If you experience additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, coughing, or chest tightness, it is crucial to seek medical attention promptly.
4. Gastrointestinal Problems: Sometimes, issues related to the digestive system, such as gallbladder disease or liver problems, can manifest as referred pain in the rib area. If you have accompanying symptoms like nausea, vomiting, or changes in bowel habits, this could be a consideration.
5. Smoking: As a smoker, you may be at increased risk for various respiratory issues, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or lung infections, which can also lead to rib pain. Smoking can exacerbate existing conditions and lead to complications that may present as pain in the chest or rib area.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Given your symptoms, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If the pain persists, worsens, or is accompanied by other concerning symptoms such as difficulty breathing, fever, or significant changes in your health status, you should seek medical evaluation. A healthcare provider may perform a physical examination and potentially order imaging studies, such as X-rays or a CT scan, to assess for any underlying conditions.
Recommendations
- Rest and Avoid Aggravating Activities: If certain movements trigger your pain, try to avoid them and allow your body to rest.
- Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help alleviate discomfort. However, consult with a healthcare provider before starting any medication, especially considering your smoking history.
- Posture and Ergonomics: Pay attention to your posture and ergonomics during daily activities. Poor posture can contribute to musculoskeletal pain.
- Smoking Cessation: If you smoke, consider seeking resources to help you quit. Reducing or eliminating smoking can significantly improve your overall health and reduce the risk of respiratory complications.
In conclusion, while rib pain can stem from various causes, understanding the nature of your symptoms and seeking appropriate medical advice is crucial. If you have any doubts or concerns about your health, do not hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation.
