Rib issues
Hello Doctor: I have been experiencing rib pain for about 3 to 4 months.
I consulted a doctor who said it was inflammation.
It has improved somewhat, but I still occasionally feel a dull pain.
Recently, when sitting in a chair, I experience pain in my ribs, and I have nerve pain in my right upper arm with numbness in my hand.
Additionally, the second rib on the right side is swollen.
I usually sleep on my right side.
Could this be bone cancer, or is it costochondritis? Here is the location of the pain: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1NZsTXf1Mh03TGAx--NI8dOS_GVqkxSJT/view?usp=drivesdk

Hello, this is a common presentation of pleurisy, which is often significantly related to prolonged sitting.
Please discontinue the medication and develop a habit of exercising.
If there is no improvement, please visit the orthopedic clinic for further examination.
Thank you.

More Info
Rib pain can be a complex issue, and understanding its causes, symptoms, and when to seek medical help is crucial for effective management. Based on your description, it seems you have been experiencing rib pain for several months, which has been diagnosed as inflammation by a physician. However, the persistence of your symptoms, including pain while sitting, nerve pain in your right arm, and swelling of the second rib on the right side, raises some important considerations.
Possible Causes of Rib Pain
1. Costochondritis: This is an inflammation of the cartilage that connects a rib to the sternum. It is a common cause of rib pain and can be exacerbated by certain movements or positions, such as sitting for extended periods.
2. Rib Fracture or Injury: If there was any trauma to the area, even if it seemed minor at the time, a rib fracture could lead to ongoing pain and discomfort.
3. Muscle Strain: Overuse or strain of the muscles around the rib cage can lead to pain, especially if you have been engaging in activities that involve heavy lifting or twisting motions.
4. Nerve Compression: The symptoms you describe in your right arm, such as nerve pain and numbness, could indicate a pinched nerve in the cervical spine or thoracic outlet syndrome, where nerves or blood vessels are compressed in the area between your collarbone and first rib.
5. Inflammatory Conditions: Conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis can cause inflammation in the rib joints, leading to pain.
6. Serious Conditions: While less common, conditions such as tumors (including bone cancer) or infections can cause rib pain. However, these are typically accompanied by other significant symptoms, such as weight loss, fever, or severe fatigue.
Symptoms to Monitor
- Pain Characteristics: Is the pain sharp, dull, or throbbing? Does it worsen with certain movements or positions?
- Swelling: The swelling of the second rib is concerning and should be evaluated further.
- Neurological Symptoms: Numbness or tingling in the arm can indicate nerve involvement, which may require imaging studies to assess.
When to Seek Help
Given that your symptoms have persisted for several months and you are experiencing new symptoms such as swelling and nerve pain, it is advisable to seek further medical evaluation. Here are some steps you can take:
1. Follow-Up with Your Physician: Return to your healthcare provider to discuss the persistence of your symptoms and the new developments. They may recommend imaging studies such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs to rule out fractures, tumors, or other serious conditions.
2. Consult a Specialist: Depending on the findings, you may be referred to a specialist, such as an orthopedic surgeon or a rheumatologist, for further evaluation and management.
3. Physical Therapy: If your pain is related to muscle strain or costochondritis, physical therapy may help strengthen the surrounding muscles and improve your posture, which can alleviate pain.
4. Pain Management: Discuss pain management options with your doctor, which may include anti-inflammatory medications, physical therapy, or other modalities.
Conclusion
While rib pain can often be attributed to benign causes such as inflammation or muscle strain, the persistence of your symptoms and the presence of swelling and neurological symptoms warrant further investigation. It is essential to communicate openly with your healthcare provider about your concerns, and do not hesitate to seek a second opinion if you feel your symptoms are not being adequately addressed. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can significantly improve your quality of life and prevent potential complications.
