Does the COVID-19 vaccine affect the results of rapid tests?
Hello Doctor: I received the next-generation vaccine yesterday, and I've been experiencing some throat discomfort in the past few days.
My previous rapid tests were all negative, but today the rapid test came back positive.
I have been in contact with a confirmed case in the past two weeks.
I would like to ask: Is the rapid test result accurate shortly after receiving the vaccine? Or could I have been infected before the vaccination, and does this positive rapid test result indicate a confirmed case?
Niming, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2023/06/01
Dr. Chen Mingong reply Influenza
Hello: After vaccination, the vaccine enters the human bloodstream and lymphatic system, and it does not interfere with or affect the results of rapid tests.
Therefore, a positive result is indeed positive, indicating a confirmed case.
However, individuals who have been vaccinated may experience milder symptoms or may be asymptomatic after a confirmed case, which is commonly observed in clinical practice.
Therefore, in medical practice, unless an individual experiences severe side effects, we strongly encourage the public to get vaccinated.

COVID-19 vaccination does not affect the accuracy of rapid tests. When you receive a vaccine, it introduces antigens into your body that stimulate an immune response, leading to the production of antibodies. However, this process does not interfere with the mechanisms of rapid antigen tests, which are designed to detect specific proteins from the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Therefore, if you receive a positive result from a rapid test, it is indeed indicative of an active infection, regardless of your vaccination status.
In your case, since you recently received a next-generation vaccine and have been experiencing throat discomfort, it is essential to consider the timeline of your symptoms and potential exposure. The fact that you had multiple negative rapid tests prior to the positive result suggests that you may have been exposed to the virus after your last negative test or that the viral load was too low to be detected earlier. Rapid tests are most accurate when the viral load is high, typically during the peak of infection, which can occur a few days after exposure.
It's also important to note that vaccinated individuals may experience milder symptoms or even be asymptomatic when infected with COVID-19. This phenomenon occurs because vaccines are designed to prepare your immune system to fight off the virus more effectively, reducing the severity of the illness. Therefore, even if you are vaccinated, a positive rapid test result should be taken seriously, and you should follow public health guidelines, including isolating yourself and notifying close contacts.
In summary, the rapid test result you received after vaccination is accurate and indicates that you likely have an active COVID-19 infection. It is crucial to monitor your symptoms and seek further testing, such as a PCR test, for confirmation and to assess the viral load. Additionally, consider consulting with a healthcare provider for guidance on managing your symptoms and determining the next steps in your care.
Lastly, it is essential to remember that while vaccines significantly reduce the risk of severe illness, hospitalization, and death, they do not provide complete immunity against infection. Therefore, continuing to practice preventive measures, such as wearing masks in crowded places and maintaining good hand hygiene, remains vital, especially in the context of ongoing community transmission of COVID-19.
