Swelling and redness in the leg?
Hello Mr.
Zhong, I am currently a 6-month pregnant woman.
Recently, I developed red, swollen bumps on my calves that have been present for about two weeks.
They resemble flea bites but are neither itchy nor painful, and they are expanding, with the largest being about 3 centimeters in diameter.
Now, I have also noticed two bumps on my thighs.
Could you please advise me on what this might be? I am concerned that they will continue to grow.
Thank you!
Xiao Mei, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2003/12/20
Dr. Zhong Yitun reply Dermatology
The situation you described may involve several potential underlying conditions.
The presence of red, swollen pimples that are painful or tender to the touch is a more concerning sign.
Whether the lesions are enlarging naturally or have expanded due to the application of any topical treatments is important to note; however, this information alone is insufficient for diagnosis and treatment.
A physical examination is necessary to provide you with more helpful insights.

More Info
During pregnancy, the appearance of red bumps or rashes on the skin can be concerning for many women. In your case, you mentioned that you are six months pregnant and have developed red, swollen bumps on your lower legs that resemble flea bites. These bumps are not itchy or painful, but they have been expanding in size, with the largest being about three centimeters in diameter. Additionally, you have noticed similar bumps appearing on your thighs.
There are several potential causes for red bumps during pregnancy, and understanding these can help alleviate your concerns. One common cause is an allergic reaction or contact dermatitis, which can occur due to exposure to certain materials or substances, especially if you are in a new environment. For instance, if you are living in an older apartment with carpets, it is possible that dust mites or other allergens could be triggering a reaction. Another possibility is insect bites, which can sometimes lead to localized swelling and redness.
In some cases, pregnancy can also induce skin changes due to hormonal fluctuations. Conditions such as pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy (PUPPP) are characterized by itchy, red bumps that typically appear in the third trimester, although they can occur earlier. However, PUPPP usually presents with itching, which you have not mentioned.
While it is understandable to be concerned about the potential impact of skin conditions on your fetus, most benign skin conditions, including insect bites and allergic reactions, do not pose a risk to the developing baby. However, if the bumps continue to grow, change in appearance, or if you develop additional symptoms such as fever, increased pain, or itching, it is essential to seek medical attention.
Given that you are currently in a foreign country and may be unfamiliar with the healthcare system, it is advisable to consult a local healthcare provider. A dermatologist or an obstetrician can provide a thorough evaluation of your skin condition and recommend appropriate treatment options. They may suggest topical treatments that are safe for use during pregnancy, such as hydrocortisone cream or other soothing agents, to help reduce inflammation and discomfort.
In summary, while the red bumps on your legs are likely not harmful to your fetus, it is crucial to monitor their progression and seek medical advice if they worsen or if you have any concerns. Maintaining open communication with your healthcare provider will ensure that both you and your baby remain healthy throughout your pregnancy.
