Generalized pruritus?
I am currently seven months pregnant, and since yesterday, I have started to develop small red bumps on my body that resemble mosquito bites.
They have increased in number and size, with more than 20 on my legs, some on my arms, and even on my scalp.
I read online that these usually start from the abdomen, but I have no bumps on my abdomen at all.
Additionally, my joints are sore.
What should I do? Thank you!

Managing itchy skin during pregnancy can be a challenging experience for many women, especially as hormonal changes and physical changes occur in the body. It is important to understand the potential causes of itchy skin and the appropriate management strategies to alleviate discomfort.
Causes of Itchy Skin During Pregnancy
1. Hormonal Changes: During pregnancy, the body undergoes significant hormonal fluctuations, particularly increases in estrogen and progesterone. These hormonal changes can lead to various skin conditions, including increased sensitivity and itchiness.
2. Stretching Skin: As the belly grows, the skin stretches, which can cause dryness and itching. This is particularly common in the later stages of pregnancy.
3. Cholestasis of Pregnancy: This is a liver condition that can occur in the third trimester, leading to severe itching, particularly on the palms and soles. It is caused by a buildup of bile acids in the bloodstream and requires medical evaluation.
4. PUPPP (Pruritic Urticarial Papules and Plaques of Pregnancy): This is a common condition that typically occurs in the third trimester, characterized by itchy red bumps and hives, often starting on the abdomen and spreading to other areas.
5. Allergic Reactions: Pregnant women may develop new allergies or sensitivities to products they previously used, leading to localized itching and rashes.
6. Skin Conditions: Pre-existing skin conditions, such as eczema or psoriasis, may flare up during pregnancy due to hormonal changes and stress.
Management Strategies
1. Moisturization: Regularly applying a fragrance-free moisturizer can help alleviate dryness and reduce itching. Look for products that contain ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid.
2. Cool Compresses: Applying a cool, damp cloth to itchy areas can provide immediate relief. This can be especially soothing for localized itching.
3. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any potential irritants, such as harsh soaps, detergents, or skincare products that may exacerbate itching.
4. Medications: Over-the-counter antihistamines, such as diphenhydramine (Benadryl) or cetirizine (Zyrtec), may help relieve itching. However, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before taking any medication during pregnancy.
5. Topical Treatments: For localized itching, topical treatments such as hydrocortisone cream may be recommended. However, it is essential to use these sparingly and under the guidance of a healthcare provider, as prolonged use of topical steroids can have side effects.
6. Seek Medical Advice: If the itching is severe, persistent, or accompanied by other symptoms (such as jaundice, dark urine, or abdominal pain), it is vital to seek medical attention. Conditions like cholestasis of pregnancy require monitoring and management to ensure the safety of both the mother and the baby.
7. Diet and Hydration: Staying hydrated and maintaining a balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals can support skin health. Omega-3 fatty acids, found in fish and flaxseeds, may also help reduce inflammation.
Conclusion
Itchy skin during pregnancy can arise from various causes, and while it is often benign, it can significantly impact a woman's quality of life. Understanding the underlying causes and implementing appropriate management strategies can help alleviate discomfort. Always consult with a healthcare provider for personalized advice and treatment options, especially if symptoms worsen or new symptoms develop. Your healthcare provider can help determine the best course of action based on your specific situation, ensuring both your health and the health of your baby are prioritized.
