If I want to be admitted to a chronic psychiatric ward, what should I do?
Hello, I would like to ask about my current situation.
The hospital I am visiting only has an acute care unit, and I have been a frequent patient there, having been hospitalized 8 times for acute issues over the past four years from 2019 to 2023.
I am wondering if my condition has become chronic, and how I can be admitted to a chronic psychiatric ward, as my current hospital (Taipei Veterans General Hospital) does not have one.
However, other branches of Taipei Veterans General Hospital might have such facilities.
I live in Bade City, Taoyuan County, but I am unsure how to get admitted to a chronic care unit.
I am currently 27 years old and do not mind long-term residency in a rehabilitation center, as my life has been severely impacted by autism and schizophrenia.
Living in a chronic care ward for the rest of my life is my ultimate hope.

Hello, Da Ren: If you want to stay in a chronic care ward, you need to first visit a hospital that has a chronic care unit for an evaluation by a physician to determine if you are suitable for admission.
As far as I know, in Taoyuan, there are psychiatric hospitals with chronic care wards such as Taoyuan Psychiatric Hospital and Ju Shan Hospital, where you can start by visiting their outpatient clinics.
If you are also open to hospitals in other counties or cities that have chronic care wards, you can ask the social worker at Taipei Veterans General Hospital for relevant information.
However, I sense that you may feel a bit discouraged about your condition.
In fact, you are still quite young and should consider more proactive rehabilitation options, such as participating in a day hospital program or sheltered employment, which you can discuss with your physician! Wishing you peace and health!

Transitioning from acute to chronic psychiatric care in Taiwan can be a complex process, especially for individuals who have experienced multiple hospitalizations due to severe mental health conditions. Given your history of frequent admissions to acute psychiatric wards, it is essential to understand the steps involved in accessing chronic care facilities, as well as the resources available to you.
First and foremost, it is crucial to have a thorough evaluation by a psychiatrist who can assess your current mental health status and determine the appropriateness of transitioning to a chronic care facility. In Taiwan, chronic psychiatric care is typically provided in specialized wards or rehabilitation centers designed to support individuals with long-term mental health needs. These facilities focus on rehabilitation, social reintegration, and improving the quality of life for patients with chronic conditions.
Since you are currently receiving treatment at Taipei Veterans General Hospital (台北榮總), it would be beneficial to discuss your desire for chronic care with your treating psychiatrist. They can provide you with a referral to a suitable chronic care facility, as well as guidance on the application process. If Taipei Veterans General Hospital does not have a chronic ward, your psychiatrist may recommend other hospitals or rehabilitation centers that do.
In Taiwan, some well-known facilities that offer chronic psychiatric care include:
1. Taipei City Hospital - This hospital has various branches, and some may have chronic psychiatric wards. It is advisable to inquire about the specific services offered at each branch.
2. Taiwan University Hospital - Known for its comprehensive psychiatric services, this hospital may also have options for chronic care.
3. National Taiwan University Hospital - This facility provides a range of mental health services, including chronic care.
4. Private Rehabilitation Centers - There are several private facilities in Taiwan that specialize in long-term psychiatric care. These centers often provide a more personalized approach and may have different admission criteria.
When considering a transition to a chronic care facility, it is essential to prepare the necessary documentation, including your medical history, treatment records, and any relevant assessments from your current psychiatrist. This information will help the new facility understand your needs and develop an appropriate treatment plan.
Additionally, if you are concerned about the financial aspects of long-term care, you may want to explore options for financial assistance. In Taiwan, there are government programs and non-profit organizations that provide support for individuals with mental health conditions. Your current hospital's social work department can assist you in navigating these resources and applying for any available financial aid.
It is also important to consider the emotional and social aspects of transitioning to a chronic care facility. Being in a long-term care environment can be challenging, and it is essential to have a support system in place. Engaging with support groups, therapy, and community resources can help you adjust to the new setting and maintain your mental well-being.
Lastly, while the idea of living in a chronic care facility may seem daunting, it can also provide a structured environment that promotes stability and recovery. Many individuals find that with the right support and treatment, they can lead fulfilling lives, even while managing chronic mental health conditions.
In summary, transitioning from acute to chronic psychiatric care in Taiwan involves a collaborative approach with your psychiatrist, thorough evaluation, and exploration of suitable facilities. By taking these steps and utilizing available resources, you can work towards achieving a more stable and supportive living situation that aligns with your long-term mental health goals.
