Fish oil issues

Hello: Recently, I started taking fish oil and curcumin to enhance brain function and lower triglycerides.
However, after about a week of taking them, I noticed a sudden sharp pain in the skin over my heart about an hour after having lunch.
Although the episodes are brief, they are quite uncomfortable.
Additionally, I discovered swelling in my right armpit, which led me to stop taking the supplements, but I still occasionally feel discomfort in the area of my right chest.
A week later, the swelling in my right armpit has subsided, but I am now unsure if I can continue taking the supplements.
I am uncertain why I experienced these issues after starting fish oil.

The health supplements available for purchase, such as fish oil, calcium tablets, and lutein, typically contain more than just a single formula; they may include various additives and unknown substances.
While these generally have a minimal impact on most individuals, they could potentially lead to issues such as breast tenderness.
If you discontinue the use of these products and notice an improvement in your condition, it suggests that these substances may be influencing this particular issue.

It sounds like you are experiencing some concerning symptoms after starting fish oil and turmeric supplements. Fish oil is generally considered safe for most people and is often recommended for its potential benefits, including anti-inflammatory properties and cardiovascular health support. However, individual reactions can vary, and it’s important to listen to your body.

The symptoms you described, such as sudden skin pain and swelling in the right armpit, could be indicative of an allergic reaction or sensitivity to the fish oil or turmeric. Allergic reactions can manifest in various ways, including skin rashes, swelling, and discomfort. The fact that you experienced pain in the skin over your heart area after taking the supplement could also suggest a hypersensitivity reaction, although it is less common.

It’s also worth noting that fish oil can have blood-thinning effects, which might lead to unusual bruising or swelling in some individuals, especially if taken in high doses or in conjunction with other medications that affect blood clotting. If you have any underlying health conditions or are taking other medications, this could also contribute to your symptoms.

Given that your symptoms improved after stopping the fish oil, it may be wise to avoid it for the time being. You can consider consulting with a healthcare professional to discuss your symptoms in detail. They may recommend allergy testing or a different approach to supplementation that could be safer for you.

In terms of turmeric, while it is generally safe for most people when used in cooking or as a supplement, it can also cause gastrointestinal discomfort or allergic reactions in some individuals. If you decide to reintroduce either supplement, consider doing so one at a time and in smaller doses to monitor your body's response.

In summary, while fish oil and turmeric can offer health benefits, they are not without risks, especially for individuals with sensitivities or allergies. It’s crucial to consult with a healthcare provider to ensure that any supplements you take are appropriate for your health status and to explore alternative options that may not cause adverse reactions. Always prioritize your health and well-being, and don’t hesitate to seek professional advice when experiencing unusual symptoms.
